Why are rear wipers so rubbish?

Featured Replies

I think in my time I've bought 3 or 4 genuine rear wipers from my local Skoda dealership. I've also tried a few other brands from various car parts places.

Each time, they've worked fine for about 3 weeks, wiping the whole of the screen with no need to use the washer until it becomes really dried.

They then decide that the middle of the screen, they'll just smear, even if the screen is totally soaked with rain. I have to use the washer for a couple of passes to get it to clear.

The genuine ones are fitting the correct way up. Well I assume the label that says up with the arrow points to the top.

/rant over.

Same problem mate, drives me round the twist! O.E. stuff seems to last the longest too, ffs. What chance have we got?

Are you talking about flat blades or old skool blades because on my fab2 they have flat blades that are a load of smiley-face-pooping-emoticon.gif give me old type blades any day.

I don't really use mine, it needs a new blade and has done for about 8 months, just cba to remove the wiper arm all together like others have done.

Will add it to the to do list

remove wiper, new badges and fit a Golf armrest

No way could I live without a rear wiper.

Before I got my Fabia, I had a Polo saloon. That was annoying enough, and the Fabia is 50x worse with road muck getting sucked up the back.

I like to see what's behind me.

Couldn't love without my rear wiper either.

I've fitted the Polo flat blade wiper and it needs a new blade I think. It just refuses to wipe over the middle. Rather annoying.

A rear window on a 40ft lorry wouldn't be much use anyway, just like the rear windows on buses and coaches aren't much use, too far away to see anything and even if they were closer, they are too high up to see cars or pedestrians

It is a small hatchback..... you have nice wing mirrors that stay clean ;)

I never use my back wiper and get angry when I start reversing with front wipers on...because it makes a clean semi circle on my car . Highlighting how dirty it is!!!

But funnily enough. Never smears Haha

I took a tip out of 44ton man's book lots of years ago and learned to reverse using wing mirrors. Something that 44t man would appreciate ,as the smaller the vehicle ,the smaller the mirrors are. Now I'm a geriatric, I find it a lot easier, and TBH- it should be something taught to learners .My rear wiper is origonal, but creaks at times. I find a dose of cheap washing up liquid on both front & rear every so often gets rid of the road oil build up.Coat the screens, spread mix over screen using wipers. Clean blades and flush copiously with water.

Years ago when I used double strength Clearalex, I never had this problem. Today, I use a dollop of cheap washing up liquid in wash bottle ( with screenwash,as the cheap  stuff don't foam, but helps get rid of road oil muck).

Mine is currently dewipered on back, id prefer one in so will be fitting one when i get a chance

No rear view camera's on my road train ...just 20 years of skill in the cab.lol

Whilst looking at wiperblade websites, I noticed the Polo and mk II rear aero wipers are 13 inch long, not 14 inches as standard Fabia ones, so they may look good, but you will actually see slightly less behind you, plus I believe you have to slightly modify the plastic cap to make it fit.

The only other alternative (other than refills) is to buy one of these: http://www.wiperblades.co.uk/skoda-fabia-hatchback-years-2000-to-2007/bosch-a350h-wiper-blade/

Last weekend I purchased one from Euro Car Parts, for £14.10, and this is how they compare:

I looked afterwards and if you add P&P  Wiperblades.co.uk is actually slightly cheaper, (ECP had free P&P). Anyway, being made by Bosch, they should last longer than OEM. It is certainly better than the cheap refill I had.

They are pretty turd. My rear washer has decided to not pump water out despite making the correct noise to do so.

I bet it's wet in the boot? I'd guess the tube has popped off under the boot trim.

Wouldn't know, I don't often fondle my parcel shelf. But it doesn't appear damp when looking. Might pop the boot trim off anyway to have a neb.

Check the pipe connections (there are 4 of them). There is a useful thread about it if you search. The most common place is on the bulkhead, just below the airfilter.

Iv got the polo straight arm blade on mine and it fitted with no mods. Straight on. Nice to be different and wipes fine for the last two years.
