I hope you can help me answer a question...

 

Do any of you know what the internal dimensions of the MK3 Octavia estate are (with seats flat).  I know the volume in litres, but I would like to know the boot aperture size plus the load area width, depth and height.

The reason I'm asking is that I need to move something that's almost 2m long, 1m wide and 0.8m deep.  It's not urgent, so I can wait until my new car arrives.  Alternatively, if it isn't going to fit, I'll rent a van and shift it ASAP.

Just from visual memory only from my estate, I doubt you'll be able to get a 2m long object inside and also close the boot. The other two dimensions would be quite close, but should be fine. Do remember that if you have the variable boot floor you can only put 75 kg on it (160-ish pounds) and if you don't, you don't have a smooth surface all the way to the front.

Thank you Tudor.  I have to transport the box quite a distance (230 miles!) and I was thinking of roping the estate door closed - maybe a van hire will be a better idea.

I am always frustrated by specification sheets and road test reports which persist in stating what the overall volume of the load area is, to the exact litre, but never the dimensions.

For my particular requirements (carring bicycles and sleeping in it) the overall length of the load bay is more important than the volume, but this is hardly ever stated anywhere.  Why not?  There must be quite a few people like me, for whom the length of the load bay is one of the most crucial dimensions of all.  It is, in fact, one of the reasons  why I want an estate car and not an SUV.  A lot of SUVs, despite their massive external bulk, have shorter load areas than an estate car.

May I suggest you grab a tape Measure and go try at the nearest dealer?  

Stranger things have happened, like me (and just about every other tuba player I know) bringing my instrument to test the boot size ... (I wasn't in doubt with the Octavia, but I was considering a Seat Toledo - a.k.a. Skoda Rapid - 1,2TSI as well).

TBH I think its going to be a VERY tight fit getting it past both the boot opening and the seats. Don't forget to measure strange combinations such as the with of the boot opening 0.8m from the bottom of the opening! They tend to get narrower higher up. My Mazda was extreme on this point, and that has been an issue when loading many an odd-shaped object!

It wouldn't be too cheeky to call or email your dealer and ask them.  I'm sure they'd be fine as you've spent lots of wedge with them.  lf you did feel a bit cheeky you could say it's not urgent and that you don't need an immediate answer.

I reckon 2m is out of the question - my 1.9m fishing holdall couldn't fit in straight in the MkII, it still hit the back of the seats at an angle. I know the MkIII is slightly larger, but I doubt you will have gained 15cm or so on the load length.

Don't some Estates have the "fold flat" option for the front passenger seat?

According to a recent test in a motor magazine (here in Sweden) that I've got the measure is just about 1.68 cm from the back of seat to the rear lid.

Depends on the types of seats you went for... You can have it only on the cloth seats and for you UK guys, I think it's only for SE and not Elegance (I might be wrong on this one).

We took our Old English sheep dog with us to test the boot size before we ordered, dealer slightly taken aback but we had a blanket with us and the dog fitted  fine and is very happy in his new (roomer) mode of transport
