heavy steering?

Featured Replies

The steering on my octavia fl vrs is alot heavier then alot of cars I have driven. I'm not complaining its too heavy its seams just alot different to say the fabia vrs. Why is this? Is it because of the 18 inch wheels or just the characteristics of the car?

I found mine becoming heavy the other day... Found that my tyre pressures were low, could be worth checking that. Even 2 psi can make a difference..

I checked them the other day and reset the tyre pressure indicator. Is the indicator accurate?

Because it's got a big oil fired boiler up front and wide tractor tyres......

I was driving a new Mk3 today and really noticed how light it was. I think you can change the steering assist in VCDS?

On my octy its been heavy to steer from the start. I know that some drivers like it, but I dont. Is it really possible ti increase steering assistent by setting VCS?

Yeah mines heavy. Not a bad thing I don't think.

Check tyre pressures first. I run mine at 2.0 bar and 2.1 at the rear and it goes noticeably heavier when they drop.

I find the steering fine.  Slightly heavier than my previous Civic and a lot heavier than my wife's Renault Clio.  The Clio, however, is far too light with absolutely no feel and encourages my wife to turn the wheels with the car stationary.

littleade - I noticed your comment reference the 'heavy' steering being due to the extra weight of the diesel engine and the wide tyres.   I have driven both diesel and petrol-engine Octavia vRSs and did not notice any difference in steering feel.  Diesel had a little more understeer perhaps but not noticeable, to me at least, unless really trying to corner hard.

In case you're interested It doesn't measure pressures directly, but rather detects changes in tyre diameter (via rpm differences). So it will pick up changes from whatever the pressures were when you reset it. I'm not sure how big the change needs to be before the warning is triggered, but I'd be inclined to just check pressures the old fashioned way myself.

As you say tyre pressure monitor actually works on diameter.  I changed from 225/40-18 tyres at 32psi to 225/45-17 (winter wheels and tyres) at 34psi today.  Diameter difference is just under -½%.  After driving for less than a mile the tyre pressure warning illuminated.

But how big a pressure change would that correspond to without changing tyres?

Anyone know if the steering assist settings can actually be changed and if so how to do it ?

As shown in my post - changed from 34psi to 32. So change  = 2psi

Just bought a Sakura steering wheel cover from Amazon (better-looking than the tacky boy-racer ones from Halfords) and boy, what a difference! Much more leverage and grip to get the car into those tight car parking spots. I've always found my Octavia hard leather steering wheel a bit slippery. No longer.
