I have had my 07 Roomster TDi 1.4 80 for about six years now and it has been largely troublefree; mileage is low at under 40k. However, two months ago I had a breakdown where the bottom intercooler hose had perished. This was replaced along with a bracket; apparently the hoses are known to perish over time so I thought this was just something that happened due to the car's age.

 

However, last Sunday the exact same section of the intercooler hose blew again; I had only done a couple of hundred miles since it was replaced, and the garage is baffled as to why or how the exact same hose has been damaged so quickly.

 

The section of hose is the one that goes at low level behind the engine.

 

Has anyone had anything similar happen or can provide any suggestions; both the inconvenience and having to pay a hundred pounds each time is getting rather tedious as one can imagine.

 

The only other notable thing that has happened recently which probably is unrelated is that at the last service in July I got the Skoda dealer to regas the a/c, since then it has been playing up; it still cools to an extent, but the radiator fan often stays on the maximum speed constantly regardless of temperature or whether the a/c is on or off

In the first picture it looks like some sort of 'mechanical' damage - are there moving parts nearby that could have caused the damage?

The mechanic who services my Roomster noticed the same hose was chaffing (not against any moving parts) at the last service, and protected it by cable-tying another piece of hose around it.  So it must be in close proximity to something down there.  I can't remember if a bracket had broken, or not.

The idea of attaching another piece of hose is excellent; will get this organised asap.

 

As to what is causing the wear, neither myself nor the garage can think of the cause; I checked the hose after going on a 200 mile journey but it was still nice and smooth.

 

I attach another photo (this one is of the same hose before it was replaced for the first time).

I had exactly the same problem and the mechanic showed me the problem - the plastic bracket had simply broken causing the hose to rub against the engine. With hindsight I thought I'd heard a whinning noise. Interestingly enough mine is also a 1.4 tdi - wonder if it's the extra vibration from the three pot? 

 

No problems since and that was over 6 mths ago.
