Indicator Stalk Being a B!tch

Featured Replies

So this morning, on my way to work still, dark outside, my Full Beams would only come on

if i pushed the stalk forward an extra little bit... Felt the switch was getting a bit sticky.

Then this evening on the way home... in the bloody dark again...

the Fulls wouldnt come on at all.

I had the same problem in my old Cordoba, got a new stalk installed at a main dealer service.

But Im just wondering if its just a sticky or slightly gunked up contact this time, as it came about quite suddenly.

Is it difficult to strip some bits down and have a little look see?

squirt some contact cleaner into the switch and then exercise in all directions.  It might help, if not then you can always buy a new stalk.

I would imagine that stripping it down would be a less then pleasant task.

mmm... have priced a new stalk, 30quid on ECP. but then another 10 for shipping.

and id have to get help taking apart all the steering wheel doohickies and airbag bobbins

So... may end up easier going Stealers. Will ring a couple tomorrow and get a price.

If going for a new stalk, how about a cruise one?  I would still try some switch cleaner first.

If i did end up going new stalk, wouldn't it need more than just that to do Cruise control?!!

Surely its not that simple!!!!!!!

Yes,  it would need a appropriate loom added and wired up and activated

hmmm.... i will contemplate for a couple of days while playing with the contact cleaner...

loom, wire and fitting available from Tech1e at a very fair price :)

prob is lee he is in tipperary..

i have several spare stalks, stock and with cruise, pm me if you are interested

I'd go the cruise control route.  I bought a kit from VW Teeside with all original VAG parts for seventy quid including p&p.  I got a garage to fit it as the final step is activation via the VAG-COM diagnostics (which I haven't got) but apart from that, it looked pretty straightforward to fit (and I'm no mechanic).  Kit consisted of stalk, sections of plug in wiring loom and very comprehensive fitting instructions, plus instructions for the garage on what to select when coding the VAG-COM.  If you go down this route though, make sure that you get the correct kit for your engine type, as there were different ones depending on the engine (all the same price though).

If you do have it done, be aware that there's no cruise control lights on the dashboard (unlike pretty much every other car manufacturer in the world), so don't presume it's not working like I did!

If I still had my old stalk you could have had it for nowt, however I didn't think anyone would want it, so it's now in landfill...

yeah, i'm thinking I'll do it, though may wait until after Xmas - get the kit online in sale.

I know a guy with Vagcom, and i know the head mechanic in my local Skoda Dealer,

So i'll probably get him to do the fitting :-)

My indicator stalk was doing funny things. After a squirt of wd-40 its been fine for 4 months so far.
