Can I ask a DSG VRS question.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am new to the DSG gear box and have a new Fabia VRS on order.  Had a great test drive, love the car and can’t wait.

The question I am asking myself is how to you do a quick launch from the lights?  Do you just put it in sport and floor it….

Didn’t really get the opportunity on the test drive.   Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question but the last auto I drove was a Peugeot 306 which is not really the same…

Don't floor it otherwise you'll likely end up sitting there in a wheelspin. About 50% throttle gives a fairly swift getaway.

^^ this, with practice you will feel how much to give to launch, I think launching in D letting it short shift 1st is quickest, then floor it !

**awaits flames**

For max attack -Pop it into manual mode apply 50% throttle for launch then flick the paddle and short-shift into second and mash the pedal into the carpet as above. Seems to "feel" quickest this way to me.

That is not Max Attack. IMO

(But maybe do not do this at Traffic Lights.)

Put it into Manual 1,

TC off where there is a good traction surface.

then floor it, do not change gear until it almost red lines in 4th, (it will change gear its self and quickly.)

about 100 mph, (remember there is no 90 mph on the speedo.) change into 5th.

Do not try with a CTHE only a CAVE.

Okay. So iv been reading about cthe and cave vrs'.

Whats the difference? Why cant you do that in a CTHE?

Cheers

The CTHE is the new Twincharger engine from late 2012 and has a different Map,

& change points for the DSG.

Feels and acts differently. & you would not want to ruin it.

I just found it will not act the same as the DSG does with the CAVE  2009-2012, when doing what i just suggested.

You are risking messing up your gearbox. But hey ho.

CTHE/DSG Works fine and possibly better with the Map it has, that is when not being abused.

I've had several FWD DSG cars now both petrol and diesel and all have issues with traction off the line. Certainly flooring it in D or S is not the quickest option in  95% of circumstances,

I usually have the box in manual, modulate the throttle depending on traction available in 1st, short shift into 2nd and then give it the beans to the red line.

With the 7 speed box, 2nd is also very low and on low traction surfaces you sometimes have to regulate the throttle again.

The Twincharger is slightly different, also not great traction, & TC needs to be off, or you can bog right down.

1st is out of by 5mph, 2nd about 30 mph. 3rd will take you to 70mph.

4th 100 mph.

The difference is the Supercharger to 2400 rpm, then the Supercharger & Turbo both to 3500 rpm, then just Turbo.

Many cars will leave you 0-30 mph, even a 50 cc moped.

But with Traction and moving, it is a lovely ride to 120 mph +

The Passat is quite difficult trying to get 259lbft through the front wheels off the line , even in the dry on 235's you always get wheel spin if you mash the throttle in D or S

Turning TC off still leaves EDL on which can lead to the front wheels bouncing and tramping so I find I still have to modulate the throttle.

I found both my vRS test drives pretty similar but both were in damp conditions.

DSG has many advantages the small downside is not having any say in how the clutches are fed in so off the line traction on FWD models is a problem. You can't even floor the little 105TSi DSG off the line. Try launch control on a Golf R DSG and the opposite is true.

I think you guys are over complicating it! :-p

Foot on brake

Select D or sport

Foot off the brake and floor it.

Beat every car on the road, right?

Good enough,

but have you tried that sitting next to an identical car,  or one you think is identical.

and see if you beat it doing that.  You might, or you might not.

Fun finding out.

So, off the line. A manual box may be quicker? So the vrs is possibly capable of a faster 0-60 time than the specs suggest if it had a manual box?

The shifts between gears are faster on the dsg though right?

The actual performance has nothing to do with the Skoda published figures, they are quicker than the spec.

VAG always take the VW, Audi & sometimes Seat figures and make Skoda ones not appear so good.

If a Skoda was more expensive then them they might change that,

but some buyer is not paying 3 or 4 grand for the same Engine and Gearbox if they think its performance is less than the cheap car, no matter what badge snobbery they might have.

Just IMO,

No, a manual box & drivers operating a clutch would really not work with the 180 ps twincharger most of the time.

Flippin hard work the Clutching you would be doing.

You might get the odd quick sprints, but you are unlikely to get the same possible economy the the DSG gets,ie  into 7th at around 45-50 mph in D.

The Supercharger, & Turbo work in harmony with the DSG all the time.

If you really get it wrong, the DSG ignores your shift.

You have a manual with the DSG all of the time if you want it, just change gear yourself.

The 160 PS Twincharger Golf and others had the manual gearbox.

I'm only joking, I agree it is very dependant on many different factors.

Short shifting in first keeps wheel spin to a minimum and the rest is just foot down fun!

So, off the line. A manual box may be quicker? So the vrs is possibly capable of a faster 0-60 time than the specs suggest if it had a manual box?

Maybe the first 10ft due to feeding the power into the surface, but once gripped the bang bang bang of the gears will have you ahead

My favourite is audi diesels, often they get 6 foot ahead by 4k revs in first, 2 redlines later I slow down and let them catch up ......

As they scream past I like to look and shout laughing ....1.4 loser !

Hahaa. Cheers mate, always good to know! Never driven a dsg myself, but my dad had a golf sportline dsg n i was really impressed tbh. He never gave full throttle from the line though, he preferred to feed it in gently.

Id love to have a thrash of a vrs. Im lovin my steering with the vrs setting. Its mega. Only got a htp 1.2 though :).

Not really worth the extra money for me. I ride a motorbike religiously during the summer. So thats my fast time of year, im pretty steady in the winter months compared lol.

well I can simple put it in "D" and floor it, works for me every time.... bad wheelspin? get better tyres.

Or choose a better road surface ;).

What DSG can do when you have proper traction.

I've owned AWD Cossies and Scoobies and you just can't beat having traction off the line. (As long as the clutch is good enough)

RWD in the dry can be just as good but a bit more hairy in the wet. FWD we will always have to put up with the front going light at launch.

?? Is this 'VRS Powered' from Briskoda, with 211 bhp from a TMC Tuniing Box and  ITG Air Intake.?

A rubbered in drag strip is hardly the same traction as you get from a standard uk road on standard road tyres though especially this time of year.

A fwd dsg certainly isnt press to the floor and go in the vast majority of situations without big wheel spin or tc spioling the fun. Still takes skill to get off the line quickly.

this is me (green fabia 2 vrs) vers a 270 bhp deisel fabia (mongrel) and a 220 bhp octy mark I .... i simnply put it n "D" and floored it...
