Help needed - new to skoda

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've recently brought a fabia 1.4 TSI DSG VRS and wanted to know when is the best time to check the oil (hot or cold) and if there are any known issues?

thanks

I would suggest that you check the oil when the engine is cold and on a flat surface (in the interests of consistency, ideally always the same flat surface).  There seem to be a few suggestions that the vRS consumes more oil that one might expect; there are a few threads here on the subject - e.g. LINK.

Good luck with the car, it sounds like a good un :)

From reading the manual, it says to read the engine oil at normal operating temp. (So go for a drive, park up and wait for 10mins with engine off) Then check the oil.

From reading on the forums, the twin charger engine uses more oil than some other cars. I would suggest to check the oil at least once every 2 weeks.

Enjoy your new car.

You need to check both and cold.  Well at least once to know which each means and how different they are.

Cold dip can be done before you start the car obviously.

but.

You might find that if the car has the correct amount of oil in,  the Oil level will be above the Hatched area, 'A' as described in the book.

*Best to know where it shows when cold.*

The correct check can not be done after running the engine for 5 minutes,

5 minutes might not even have the oil showing 50*oC on the Maxidot.

Lots of people get wrong readings when checking 'Warm Oil' and not at 'Normal operating temperature'.

The VW Owners manual has good TRanslation to English and the Skoda Owners manual has very poor Translation.

Same engines, description & wording is different, so misleading.

*****So once the car has been up to normal running temperature, which is above 80*oC,  then park on the level and dip the oil.

The Owners manual says after a few minutes.

I would say 5 minutes is long enough.

To me 5 is a few,  longer should say how long.  & who wants to hang about for 10 minutes just to dip your oil.

So long story short.

 know where is is Cold.

Know where it is on a 'Consistent Check hot',  do not overfill.

This picture on the left is as high as it should show when hot. the top of the Cross Hatch is the top of Area 'A'.

On a cold dip it is liable to be nearer the top orange marker.

Do not top up according to cold dips.

Left pic, do not have oil above this when hot dipped,

Right pic, (sorry poor picture,) Cold dip, almost at the Orange Blob.

There is a 3rd way and worth a try.  Nothing to lose.

Do a cold Dip and see where the oil level is.

Then, go start the engine and stop it right away, as soon as started stop it.

The oil is now in the oil filter,

Dip the oil and see where it is.

If you dip Later on after your journey, 'A Hot Dip',  you might find the 3rd way was giving the same reading as the Hot Dip.

(The 3rd way is a 'Jabozuma Dip',  that is the way i check before a journey.)

Sorry bit of a novice with skoda's :)

If your garage has done an oil change with Quantum Long LIfe III 10w 40 Full Synthetic, then use that.

Or 10w 30  or 10w 40 Full Synthetic something else, Castrol Edge or Similar.

Look at the Service Folder, see if there is an Invoice for the Services, see if it shows what oil has been used.

Buy the same if you need to top up.

They should really not use much Oil, but might need an occasional top up.  do not stress over it, just know how to check.

They do not use lots of Oil. Only ones that do, do, if it uses too much, then the engine is not right.

George, despite the many threads about oil levels I can't recall one aspect being mentioned, but I may be wrong, there is so much to read!

....which is regarding the total engine contents, which is stated as 3.6 litres.

I recall some vehicle manual of the past sometimes gave three figures:-

--Total dry fill

--Drain and refill without filter change

--Drain and refill with filter change

Not sure if it matters much but the thought did occur to me.

Handy if you can find it.

But the capacity is 3.6 litres which is not lots.

0.5 litres down if you start with 3.6 litres of oil is pretty low at 3.1 litres in the Engine.

1 litre lower than 3.6 litres and you are running with less than 3/4 of the ideal oil level.

So its up to whatever someone wants to run their car with in.

Overfilling is a bad thing,

anyone needs to consider if being a 1 litre short is acceptable.

The hot check pretty much shows the correct level of oil when checked on the flat at the correct temperature.

(I run with 3.7 litres and that is at the top of the Cross Hatch.)

When cold the 3.6 litres filled up, it is back in the sump and the 0.5 litres or so is not up the top end and in the Filter Housing.

  • 1 month later...

Rather than start a new topic... but can someone tell me the part numbers for a VRS oil filter etc? I got some Liqui Moly Toptec cheap today ($58 for 5L), so I'm after a service kit, or at least the minimum "bits" for an oil change.

EDIT: Never mind. I found them by looking further back in the "search" options. Courtesy of George, the part numbers for oil filter and sump plug: 03C115561D & N90813202
