Any mods to improve lift off/traction

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Ok so im modding my octy slowly. My 110 ASV is kicking out 137 aparrently, plus 1 or 2 other mods, maybe more, I dont know. Problem is even when its dry i hit 2.5k an most gears and lose grip. I have replaced my tyres for A rated grip ones, Dunlops, but im still losing grip. So, how can peopl ehave Mk1 Octys kicking out over 200bhp when my car is struggling at 130+

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Engine mounts (notably the lower engine/gearbox support)

Better suspension

Limited slip diff

engine mounts... sounds cheap and easy... any recommendations?

The THS FR3 kit is a good starting point

Replace the Dunlops with decent tyres. No joke; I could lose traction with Dunlops on a standard ASV, and not had anythign like the same issues with Toyos or Barums.

sorting out the dog bone mount will help with traction and wheel hop

also, if your car only has ASR - turn it off ;)

it does.. i will.

Also dogbone looks like a good one. Cheap too if its just the bush....

the dog bone makes the most difference along with the tyres imo

reduces the forward and back movement of the whole setup allowing you to put down the power rather than creat wheel hop.

easy to do the bushes too, if you want to do it properly do both bushes in the dog bone.

Does changing out the engine mounts such as that FR3 kit count as a modification that insurance company should be told about?

How big are your wheels and tyres? What will turning off the ASR do too?

my wheels are 205/55/16's?

OK powerflex bushes ordered!

On a TDi, it will let you spin the power away rather than having it pegged back. ASR's not a lot of use  unless there's ice or snow about (and sometimes not then; I've needed to put it off to climb ridges a few times).

OK ASR off helps I think. Dogbone bushed turned up this morning... job for over christmas! :)

Don't forget the rs is lower, stiffer and the body is tighter. So it's going to go round corners an bit better.

Oh and the engine is lighter which will add to the handling.

If I'm honest the rs handling licks balls !!!

The comment regarding Dunlop tyres is a little strange.

In my experience they make some of the grippiest tyres available at mid to premium level so, assuming they're in decent condition and relatively new I wouldn't think that was an issue.

Your uprated dogbone should prevent hopping of the tyres due to movement of the engine and gearbox but only as long as everything else is good.

As for comparing it to the vrs, they are not very quick off the line either partly due to turbo lag and when you do come on boost in the low gears it does lose traction.

One of these should do it...
