2 problem solved 2 to go.

Featured Replies

Regarding older posts about my Skoda's problems. Fabia mk1 1.4 mpi 2002.

1. Was reading low battery voltage dispite having fairly recent alternator fitted and brand new battery. Turns out all wires between them were split in places and plastic clip to alternator was broken so sitting ehere it should but not clipped tight in place. New loom between alternator and battery. Problem solved :)

2. Shockingly low MPG. On average my mgp sat around 23.8 once achieved 31 or so. Doing 20-25min trips to our car unit, never really do a short journey, rarely motorway miles even then not much better, 28mpg. For a little car I was expecting more. After asking in the forum, car had a service new sensor and new maff. Getting 32-35ish now around town. Much happier with that. So thanks guys :D

Problems 3 & 4 still need to get round to. Power steering is completely shot light on all the time now and super heavy steering going at slower speeds. I have a new power steering pump but not the time to have it done. And need a set of wishbone bushes rather soon!

Getting there....

Keep going GeorgeAnne, things will be good again :)

We've got the same car and 32-35 seems about right for us. I'd expected more than that when we first had it, but that was false expectation on my behalf.

We've also got a battery / low voltage issue that I need to sort out, so I'll look at the wires you mention to see if we have anything similar.

Keep going though. Ours is on 115,000 mile and still going strong (after a new head gasket) and showing no sign of mechanical failure (only electrical).

If its an 1.4 mpi I believe soon after 2003 or so the engine was changed because of its high emissions and low mpg. So 35 is about right for the age. Mines got 108, 270 on the clock. All history of services and parts up till 2009 then who I had if offyoung lad with no clue about anything abused the car for 3-4years no services etc. So car deserves some tlc haha :)

Great job.

The bushes aren't the end of the world so the biggest thing to worry about is the steering.

DIrty oil isn't so bad for engine wear as no OIL at all ! So long as it was on the dipstick its not a total end of the world scenario. Its if the lack of oil change had led to increased wear that finally leads to oil loss from the dipstick that is when you really get high oil consumption.

Also what was the mileage in those 4 years, doesn't the car have semi synth anyway (recommended) and so age of the oil is probably less important than high mileage on it ?

My 1.4MPi was extremely good on oil, far better than the vRS but I think thats because of oil past the turbo seals more than anything
