LCR Steering Wheel? Cut off?

Featured Replies

Picked up this little beauty today from a breakers. Have you guys ever tried refurbishing a leather steering wheel? It's strange because it look like the leather was originally red and was then dyed or something from the factory, bits of red are starting to show through on the side grips.

Also please take a look at that last pic, it looks like the tube has been cut quite unevenly. Is that part of the steering wheel or just because they cut it off the car in a hurry and didn't remove it properly?

I think that's been cut off. The steering column should have a splines end that the wheel drops onto. Oh, and the red bits, they are filthy mate and should be red :D

because they cut it off the car in a hurry and didn't remove it properly

:)

Not a problem, just remove the airbag and undo the nut and remove the cut off steering column.

**** me that's dirty! Get one of those magic sponges, will bring it up like new providing it's not damaged.

Cheers guys, awesome help as always!

I never realised it should be red underneath. What products are best to use to bring it up to scratch?

Also I've just undone the airbag but which of these connectors should I disconnect and use for the Skoda one?

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the wheel?

Yeah it's really dirty! Half the stitching has turned bloody black. The leather looks pretty good though.

An almighty 50 notes! They seem to have dive-bombed in price, i guess because most of them look like this. But I don't think it'd take much to look half decent. I may even keep the Seat airbag and see if i can change the badge. I prefer the look of the Seat one TBH.

try a little soapy water first and see how you get on :)

Cheers, just bought a couple online so will give it a shot. Someone mentioned to me that Furniture Clinic do some good products as well?

Any ideas on how to disconnect the airbag? Should I disconnecting the yellow plug on the back of the airbag or do you remove it from the wheel itself?

don't quote me on this but I'd leave it connected for now and see if the same socket is used on the Fabia. If so just reconnect it when fitting.

If that is incorrect please mention now, don't want Jase' bag exploding!

I'm getting impatient with my bag now dammit!  :@

Hehe. I think the whole metal cage has to come out of it to be replaced with the one from my Skoda wheel otherwise the airbag doesn't fit flush with the wheel?

Don't do that just yet!

I'd disconnect your fabias battery and go check in 30 mins what it looks like on the back. Or i'm sure a google search will reap you some pics of what it looks like on the rear!

I may have just released my bag prematurely....

It happens to the best of us :(

Sometimes you just gotta smile and carry on.

:giggle:

That looks to be more than dirt to me, my guess is someone may have tried to cover up something with a black leather stain.

If soap and water with sponge lifts nothing, that's my guess.

Thats what I was thinking. I may even go down the route of something like this if the clean/magic sponge doesn't do a great deal. - http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=237835

Its meant to be all black with red stitching

Its common for the perforated bit to rub through to red :(

Still got it for a good price

To remove the airbag you use a flat blade screw driver throught the 2 holes in the back of the wheel + wiggle untill it releases

Then remove the bolt attaching it to the column. Will either be a big bolt of a multi- spline

Your Skoda VRS airbag will fit straight on ;)

The only way to get it back black is to retrim it m8

You can get leather dye

I used it to cover a worn piece on my octavia vrs leather seats
