Kerlunk! Brake discs/pads sticking

Featured Replies

Hey all

It's an all too familiar sound, the krunch made when a car sets off (especially in reverse) after some wet weather. I know it's brake dust settling between the pads and discs, but I'm surprised it is happening so quickly with my new motor.

To be fair, I used to part my last Octy (manual) in the garage, in gear and without the handbrake on. Now with the DSG I'm in parking mode and put the handbrake on. Perhaps I'll just leave in parking mode from now on.

Any suggestions?

Totally normal, it's the pads getting stuck to the disc with corrosion due to being wet.  Mine's done it a few mornings in the wet, i'm not worrying over it.

It is annoying but all cars I've had with discs have done it. With DSG I leave it in park & don't put handbrake on when possible. Another reason I am not a fan of automatic handbrakes.

Cheers gents. I'll try it with the HB off for a while and report back.

My car isn't garaged but fortunately sleeps on a level drive, I never leave the handbrake on - I was told years ago that doing so stretches the cable and of course in icy weather it can leave the brakes frozen on. Even with the handbrake off the brake pads do occasionally stick to the discs first thing. Quite normal.

The handbook is great on this matter.....

I'm in China and don't have access to it but I can remember that on 2 consecutive pages it tells you that you not to apply the handbrake and to leave it in P.  Then it says to always apply the handbrake.

Only used my handbrake 2 or 3 times,  P works as it should, never had the brakes stick on in a morning since ownership started in July.
