Diesel fumes now really noticeable - why?

Featured Replies

We've had our 2008 Octavia Scout 2.0TDi PD140 DPF since nearly new.

Full Skoda service history (every 10K) and it's currently on 44,000 miles.

It's mechanically sound, not a single issue since we've had it. No EML or DPF lights, not even a noticeable DPF regen.

In the last few weeks both my wife and me have begun to notice very strong diesel fumes. If a door or the boot lid is open with the engine running the smell is very strong.

Even reversing onto the driveway, shutting off the engine, taking the seatbelt off, getting out of the car and walking to the boot the smell can be detected.

I'm 100% sure it never used to be a problem, but it is now.

As with all DPF equipped cars the tail pipes are clean, no soot. Always filled with BP standard diesel.

Any idea what is going on!?

Has it been serviced recently??  maybe a leaking fuel filter or pipe not fitted correctly on the engine?

It was last serviced in July and the fuel filter was renewed.

I've been under the bonnet a few times since and not noticed any leaks. I'll take another look.

There has been a metallic rattle since it was serviced but I'd assumed this was an exhaust heat shield that has been knocked etc.

The smell has only really appeared (or at least noticed) in the recent weeks.

sounds a lot like some sort of leak, def have a good poke around the fuel filter

+1. And I recall a mechanic mate of mine told me that the fuel filter housings are a bit of a weak spot on vag models of this age so perhaps have a look there. Have you checked whether your fuel consumption has increased?

Warranty?

Ring Skoda service and enquire if worth bringing in (after thy tell u the problem of course!)?
