Where to get discs & pads from for the vRS

Following an 'advisory' at the 2 year service that my discs were starting to break down at the edges I have been looking round for sources of replecements. Not sure I want VAG parts given the originals have not lasted well and a comment from the service desk about them. But when I do the search round the various internet based suppliers I have previously used most do not list the Mk2 vRS so I am struggling to ensure I get the correct discs and pads. I'm not after track day discs and pads just decent OEM replacements.

Who is everyone else using (manufacturer and seller)?

I'm in no desperate rush to do the job as the current discs and pads are still fine and not having a workshop it is most certainly a summers day job.

Would disks that are starting to "break down at the edges" not be covered by warranty??

 

I can understand that pads might reasonably be classed as consumable items but unless you have done a very high mileage or had failed to change pads that were completely worn down I wouldn't expect the disks to be falling apart.

They are not a Warranty item though.

 

Plenty of threads here showing the surface/cosmetic overnight corrosion that forms on the disks.

Several posts and threads i have posted of new unregistered cars in the showroom with slight rust forming.

& Demonstrators that require their disks skimmed or replaced before they are sold to a buyer.

 

Skoda like many other dealerships give advisories on Disks requiring replacement,

but will sell you a used car with Disks that look worse than the ones on your own car you might be trading in.

 

On the vRS the edge and the corrosion does not usually have an effect on the pads, and the pads can be as new as the edge is not touched by them.

Admittedly not a Mk II Fabia vRS, but I've just replaced my Octavia 1.8T 4x4 rear discs and pads with Pagid from Eurocarparts.

If you think rusting Disks is depressing, then best not buy any Skodas, VW's etc, because it can happen to any not just Fabias.

Look around an Audi Dealers forecourt at some sales vehicles that have sat a few days and probably  been having a wash each day..

 

Maybe buy a vRS and you get more smiles per miles for your money.

Surface corrosion is no biggy,

and many premium brand manufacturers brakes are just as prone.

George,I don't doubt what you say about warranty claims on rusty discs being denied but,like others,I wouldn't personally find it acceptable in certain circumstances....I think you can argue here than the oem parts may be "not fit for purpose".

Some years ago I had discs replaced under warranty on a 30 month old car because they were warped causing pedal judder.

Not the same thing you may say,but the maker could have argued wear and tear,but they didn't.

IMO original discs should survive one pad change easily and not be considered for replacement untill the next pad change,which might be at 60/80 k miles.

Sometimes you have to stand your ground with warranty matters despite what the dealer tries to fob you off with.You may not succede,but if you don't try....

Warped discs are most often the result of driving with hot brakes, stopping at lights, roadworks etc, and holding your foot on the brake pedal,

or pulling on the hand brake and hot discs distorting.

Sometimes, fast driving, hot brakes and then crossing a ford, or deep puddle,

or just Disc Brakes that warp.

 

Anyone can ask or argue for Warranty replacements if they want, Warped or Corroded brakes,

stand their ground on wanting new discs because there is surface corrosion around the edge of the Disc.

Why not ask if that is what they want to do, someone can say yes, or no, and if no, you can ask someone else.

 

My Hyundai i30 was new in October 2009

& had new Discs, Calipers and pads, and wheels & wheel nuts replaced under warranty in March 2010.

They were rusting within a month of being used and the first salt on the roads.

 

As i said, dealers will sell you Ex Demo cars with 3000 miles on them,

you just say you want the discs replaced or you are not taking it.

Often they then skim the discs.

& do not replace the pads.

 

Or you buy the car and at the next service you get an advisory,

'Scored Discs.' Corrosion on Discs' etc.

@ the MOT the brakes are tested and if they pass the Efficiency, you are not failing on Cosmetic Rust around the Edges.

 

Location, location, location,

Some places get lots of Winter salt from October- March and some places very little.

People use different wheel cleaners, 

& with Demo Cars,Used sales cars,  they get washed daily and often not driven for days or weeks and get lots of Surface rust on Braking Surfaces and around the edges.

The braking surface rust cleans off easily when the brakes are used. Left longer the braking surface can get pitted. the outer area 

might just continue corroding as some discs do.

Some people still tap with a hammer around the edge of Brake Discs removing rust as has been done on vehicles for decades.

& not always on old cars, because many older cars have discs that are still fine after 30 years of being on a car.

If I was replacing discs on a car I wanted to keep for a long time I would have the discs anodised ( can be silver or gold).

As the pads bed in they rub the plating off the friction surfaces but it obviously remains on the edges and hubs and protects against corrosion as well as giving a better look.

Many companies sell aftermarket discs, and you choose the protective finish you want on the non braking surface, & the colours.

Not very expensive.

Personally a paint my own with the correct paint on vehicles where the appearance matters.

& on my Suzukis the £21 Discs just do not rust, but do the braking really quite well.

All the above having been said,going back to the what was stated by the OP,I don't think there will be anything wrong with his discs just the dealer touting for business.

I am reluctant to go for top or bottom of the range replacements when they are needed but as I have been looking round it does seem that some of the online retailers don't list the vRS or at least don't list both front and rear. I can find the part number by going into EBC or other manufacturers sites but was wondering what others are doing as I can't believe everyone is letting the deealers get on with it.

What dealer are we talking about? I use Rainworth so I want to be ready if they try this trick on me !!
