EGR valve?

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

hoping someone can give me some advice. I have a 1.6tdi Octavia (2010), about 32,000 miles on the clock but warranty ran out in May. Recently the glow plug warning light started flashing followed by the engine management switching car to limp mode. Restarting the engine doesn't clear it. My local garage says the fault code is related to the exhaust system, but they can't be more specific....they think it may be the EGR valve but can't be 100% sure and with parts and labour it would be a very expensive job (£700/800)...the alternative is to have a dealer run diagnostics but that would be £120 itself and I would have to wait about three weeks until they could fit it in!  I so need my wheels back, and gut instinct & googling suggests it'll be the valve, but could be a very expensive mistake if it isn't...any advice please, pretty please

Thanks

Is this a pd or cr? Guessing Pd? I can give you a couple of numbers of independents in Ayrshire if that's any use, don't know where you are based but they are ex Audi master technicians and I guess they will be cheaper than your local Skoda outfit. My pd vrs clicked off at around 30k then repeated the trick 9 times even though it was doing 20k a year, under warranty and 2 different dealers couldn't rectify despite endless runs to the garage, regens , even Skoda Assist twice. Got a new fl with cr engine and never done it once in 4 yrs.

do a search and see if anyone near you will vag-com it    not followed this but have seen one or two items on 16 diesel egr's     take a look also on other forums using that engine

You first need someone with vagcom and read out error. Force a regeneration.

Usually EGR valves on these include engine coolent.

Like mentioned, first would do a forced regeneration.

I had same problem with my Cr luckily it was covered by warranty so took it straight to dealer. Turned out to be (excuse me if my terminology is incorrect) turbo vacuum unit. Cost was about £350 fitted iirc.

I've suffered a similar - but not quite the same - problem with my 1.6 Greenline. 24k miles and just turned 4 years old.

On a recent trip there was a small of hot oil in the cabin and it started to lose power, to the extent that going up inclines in crawler lanes wagons restricted to 60mph were gaining on me! No warning lights though, and I'm not sure if that was indicative of 'limp mode'. Also noticeable was a 'gasping' sound when depressing the throttle; despite this breathlessness, the car was OK around town where no high speeds or sudden acceleration required.

Local garage (not VAG / Skoda dealer) diagnosed EGR fault. Obtained original VAG part at £312.70 (inc. VAT) and charged me £94 (inc VAT 1.6 hours @ £50/hr) labour.  I cannot say whether it really was bust or simply needed cleaning, but have the old part if that's of interest to anyone.

I'm quite ignorant of diesels, turbos, EGRs etc. but unimpressed overall with my Greenline. I've done 15k miles this year and saved £600 in fuel and road tax, but savings are severely eroded by issues such as this!  I note that elsewhere people recommend removing the EGR. Are these a legal requirement or not? It appears this improves performance but results in filthy exhaust smoke. What impact does this have on one's emissions and MOT test results?

You dont need an egr. All it does is simly mean you burn exhaust gasses twice and is something else which isnt needed and can/does go wrong

There are lots of problems associated with EGR valves on this engine. On my wife's Golf it failed at 23000 miles and out of warranty. VW didn't want to know.

The part has cooling fluid running through it and cost in total £495 to replace. Independent garage told me that TPS, VAG own parts suppliers told them they go for a pastime!

I contacted Honest John of Daily Telegraph for his thoughts on the matter.Seems VW has had a lot of problems with this engine.

it's also the limited access on the 1.6tdi that makes the labour charges a killer as it is located at the back of the engine instead the front

Same on the pd170. The valve is at the front but the cooler etc is all at the back burried

Just having to have a new EGR unit fitted by Skoda dealer in Crewe. My Octavia 1.6 Tdi only three & a half years old and 33,000 miles on the clock. Skoda paying for 70% of item, will still cost me £189. Not really impressed with diesels any more if this sort of thing keeps on happening. Have always had petrol and will change back when I replace this one.

My Octavia is 1.6 TDi with 33,000 on the clock too, has flashing glow plug light with engine management light on too.

Skoda dealer in Norwich has just rung with results of the diagnostics test and it is the EGR valve.  Skoda are offering to cover all the part cost and 50% of the labour leaving me a bill of £229.

Anyone know if our 09/10 Octavias just got a faulty part or if this is a whole design/operation issue.

Very worried that if it is the latter then after another 30,000 miles and it goes again they might not be so generous and I'll have an £850 bill to foot.

We were hoping to keep this car for the duration of its life, now I'm not so sure.
