SIM to Micro SIM

Featured Replies

Getting SWMBO a new phone for Christmas, but her current SIM is full size, and she'll need a micro SIM.

Is it best to ask Tmobile for a new SIM?  Are they issuing the pop out version with the 3 sizes, or just the size you order?

I would just ask for a new one. Normally charge about £1

Not sure if you can get a one card fits all. When I ordered some cards from GiffGaff they do either a standard/micro or a nano from the pictures they use the design of the chip looks different so not sure if it is as simple as one card and two adaptors.

If she is on a contract then you'l presumably need to get one of their cards and then get the number transferred across.

All the same apart from some chip parts look slightly bigger.

I got a Galaxy S4 recently as I fancied one and replaced my S2, I havd the normall big mini sim and needed a micro sim. You can if your up for it, do what I did and cut down your existing sim card and all will be fine. I did this as O2 was posting out my micro sim (for free) but I couldn't wait. Just got back to NI and found they posted it to wrong address and it's been here waiting for me for weeks!

The only difference between a mini-sim, micro-sim and newer nano-sim, is the amount of plastic around it. You can cut the old mini-sim down to a nano even if needed.

Good template in description of this vid that I used.

Well, learnt something already today, thanks for that.

I cut my standard SIM down to a micro SIM for an iPhone 4S without any issue.

Measure carefully using a downloadable template, cut slightly too big and sand down the edges to get an exact fit.

Ask your network for a nano-SIM. O2 do it for free, I'd assume others will be the same if you Pay Monthly. Took a couple of days to arrive for me (probably over the counter if you go in-store), then when I got the new phone I could swap the SIMs over online on their website which took a couple of hours to kick in.

eBay sell a set of adapters for about a quid - just plastic surrounds to make a nano-SIM fit any phone you want. Then you're pretty much future-proof as you can't get smaller than a nano-SIM until they change the overall SIM card design.

Well after investigating seems SWMBO already has a combo sim as they call it, so she can pop out the micro SIM and off she goes.  If she keeps the other bit she can put it back in anything needing a full size SIM.

I'm not so lucky, and Tmobile will sting me for £10.20 if I want one :(

On voda it was free.

You can get a sim cutter to cut a full size to micro (but not nano!).

For example:

Any mobile accessories/repair stand in a shopping centre/market should be able to do this for you in seconds and if you're lucky, gratis.

How I got mine.

I cut my standard down to micro and it didn't work... It was a really old sim though, not sure if this had anything to do with it, continued to work in my old phone 'til my new micro sim arrived (no cost)

I've cut down about 4 sims now and they have all worked fine.

Printed out a template from the internet and stuck it on with double sided tape to draw the lines.

My experience of T-Mobile when i lost my phone was that if you go into one of their stores and ask nicely, they'll do you a new sim for nothing.

Orange were gonna charge me £30 for a new micro-sim. I took it to one of those dodgy small phone shops you see everywhere and they cut my old one for 50p and it's worked great

When I got my Galaxy S3 from Carphone Warehouse they cut my SIM card down to the Micro size for me and didn't charge me for doing so either.

Be careful using one of those sim cutter devices, I had a couple of spare sim cards and I did practice cut on one and it completely fooked the card, despite me following the instructions to the letter.

Needless to say the sim cutter was put in with all of the baked bean & other cans we had and went to the recyclers and damned good riddance too, I wish I'd not paid £5 for it though.
