Do I have to replace DM flywheel with clutch?

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Clutch slipping v slightly, so getting a new one, seeing as I am seriously skint at the mo', do I have to replace the DM flywheel, as that is what costs all the money!

Also how easy is it to replace clutch on an Octy vrs mkI, could I do it at home?

Cheers.

I also was about to put a post regarding this, I have typed in clutch kits online and nearly everyone wants to sell you the dual mass as well.

Euro car parts type your reg and they have an LUK clutch kit 3 piece without dual mass for £110.

I'm no mechanic but unless you know the flywheel has had it then it doesn't need changing, most places say it should be done while the car is apart but why fix if if it's not broken?

If you get another 5 years out of your dual mass with just a new clutch it's money well spent.

I don't know how to tell exactly if the DM is knackered but I'm just replacing the clutch.

Always get LUK though, it's likely what was on it in the first place and I've tried other brands at around same price to be disappointing.

I did mine myself - it's not that hard if you take your time and follow one of the useful online guides.

You'll need a friend to help get the gearbox back in, but I managed to do the rest myself, including removing the gearbox using two jacks.

Not replacing the DMF when doing the clutch is a bit of a no no. DMF failure is very common, & if the clutch is going chances are the DMF won't be far behind, then the gearbox & clutch have to come off again. False economy IMO. Fitting a solid flywheel is a cheaper option, & worth considering when on a tight budget.

What difference would it make to fit a solid as apposed to the DM?

I mean I didn't know you could just decide to fit a solid one instead because it's cheaper, that's useful to know.

You don't have to replace the DMF, but most of the cost of the job is labour which you'll have to pay all over again if the DMF subsequently fails.

My local indy also reckons that those that fitted SMF conversions are starting to see engine failures. DMFs were fitted for a reason.

I did think I'd have been suggested SMF to save money if it was logical.

I think if I'm getting it all done I'll just buy the original parts that are on it not mess about with conversions.

Is there a way to know if it's worn?

I've seen Many stories if people saving money by leaving DMF alone and being find for years I've heard few stories about them failing ever?
