Tyres

Featured Replies

Car was in for a service yesterday - 20k - but done 18k or so. Anyway, good ol' maxidot kept telling me that it was required, so I booked it in at Simpsons, Colne. Bought from Simpsons Preston, but not going back - that's for another thread.

Service rang me to say that all was going well but I needed two new front tyres. I'd expected as much and thought I'd done pretty well to get that kind of mileage out of the original tyres. They replaced them for me at the same cost as my local tyre fitter, but on the vehicle health check report, the driver's side rear which was replaced recently with a Khumo, due to a puncture in the sidewall is down to 5mm tread depth, whereas the other is at 7mm.  Have I got an alignment issue ? The dreaded saw toothing springs to mind or is the uneven wear just relatively normal ?

You'd know if you were sawtoothing.

Unless you have a habit of going around many roundabouts then it might well be worth getting your alignment checked but on a proper 4 wheel setup not a Kwik Fit deal.

Probably best measuring them yourself before you do anything, dealers love telling people tyres are more worn than they are.

Indeed or phrasing it to seem like you do.

Right, job for the new year then. Andyvee had his done on his last car so I'll ask him where he had it done.

Normally the nearside tyres wear slightly faster due to all the roundabouts, although not so much faster that it really matters.  Obviously if you have asymmetric tyres (as opposed to directional tyres) you can rotate them left-to-right to even this out.

Sawtoothing makes a rumbling noise, a bit like a wheel bearing beginning to die.
