Ordering my Octavia 3 shortly...need advice

Featured Replies

Hi gang,

Hope yer all well.

I'm looking to order my Octavia in the new year.

I want to basically order an Octavia in the following guise:

Colour: Silver

Trim level:  Elegance

Bodystyle: Hatchback

Engine: 1.6 TDI

Transmission:  6 speed manual

Optional Extras:

LED Rear Taillights

Sports suspension

Potentially: 18' Gallus alloy wheels

or like this:

Both these cars look to sit lower than the standard Octavia's  on the road.. If I order the optional sports suspension (along with the corresponding wheels), will my car look identical to the ones photographed above or will they sit higher?

thanks lads,

Ed

They will sit higher. Suspension drop with sports suspension is minimal. The pictures you have are media shots and are not true to how the actual vehicle sits in real life.

If you can, try and place your order before the New Year as the offers are changing and a price rise as well, not sure what changes there are price and offer wise on an Elegance, but certainly worth considering :-)

Here's my elegance with STANDARD suspension and Golus 18" Wheels if it helps:

Also the 1.6 TDi is only available with a 5 speed box in the manual

I hate to say this, but you asked, I wouldn't have a 1.6 if I had the choice.  Having driven one for the same amount of time as my 2.0 TDI, I found it lacked power and ran out of beans when overtaking at medium speed.  If economy is what you're after and you don't mind winding up the engine a little, then stick with it as it is smooth and quiet - just a little gutless for my liking.

Just backing up the last 2 posts. 1.6TDI is a 5 speed.

Also, if you can afford, go with the 2.0TDI. Much more lower down acceleration, and doesnt need to be revved as much. Because of the poor acceleration low down it takes a while until you get the kick of the turbo. It comes quicker with the 2.0 TDI.

Also, with the 1.6 the turbo gives you a sudden, and very short burst of acceleration. Hence as mentioned, soon running out of puff after this.

With the 2.0 the turbo kicks in gradually, and you dont get the most power until later on in the rev range. Low down acceleration is better, and because it picks up gradually, you still have plenty of power later on in the rev range for overtaking etc. Also because the turbo delivers its kick gradually, its a much smoother acceleration. Much much smoother. You dont get a sudden kick like on the 1.6.

I was about to order the 1.6, as thought it was OK on the test drive. However i thought about it for a minute, because the lack of low down acceleration really was obvious, and asked if they had any 2.0s sitting at Emden as well. Turned out they had a lot more, and in better colours, so went for the 2.0, even without test driving it. Am I so glad i did. Brilliant power pick up. Economy isnt much worse either. In fact, considering you dont need to rev the 2.0 as much, I doubt you'll see a lot of difference at all.

In my experience having had both for the same journey and using the same driving style my avg in the 1.6 was 56mpg and in the 2.0 is 52mpg.  This is from onboard computer using 'since last refuel' so a decent period to assess and was based on 3 refuels for each car.

Cheers Nick. I admittedly was going by quoted figures, and the fact the 1.6 really does need some revs to achieve any decent acceleration.

You need to stay within the turbo range for quite a while before changing up. Change up early and its like youve lifted your foot off the accelerator (for longer than you really have).

However, just to clarify, the 2.0 doesnt require as much acceleration if you are happy with 'average 1.6 style' acceleration.

If you want to get the most from the 2.0, then yes it does need revving just as much, thanks to the turbos gradual and smooth increase.

The main benefit is the fact you have that extra in reserve.

Can i add something else in as well. Leave the LED tail lights out. Having looked at those pics at the top, they look worse than mine. The funny LED strips just arent right. Anyway, LEDs are other rated. Im sure they dont give out as much light.
