1.4 TSI DSG or Manual

Featured Replies

Hi

I know the DSG is cleaner but, is it leaner.

The published fuel figures show the DSG as worst but, whats going on in the real world.

Anybody out there care to share their fuelly figures.

Too early to say what my MPG is really going to be as I have only had the car 40 days and not managed to clock up 1000 miles yet.

I think you also need to give an idea of your driving conditions for example mainly town driving etc.as there is no point in comparing mainly town short trips with longer runs.

Dempsek, I drive fast where I can, as a postman, I get to travel outside rush-hours 22 mile round trip to work and back 235 times a year, the other 5k p.a. is sorta 50/50 round town and motorway with family so far more sedate. I'm more than likely to fit a DTUK tuning box and a pipercross panel air filter just for a little more fun, when I can.

In short, a bit heavy on the gas Oh & brakes.

I also used to be a postman, then the dreaded a RM manager for national (yippee) took redundancy.

Except for the test drive, the DSG is only the second auto I have ever driven (the first being earlier this year in America) and I love the combination of DSG, ACC and the paddles easy lazy driving with options to go fast - well for me.

My work run is only 4.5 miles at the start of rush hour traffic, combined with local 20 mile round trips again in normal traffic. How traffic flow is for you depends on which of the three shifts you work, as for terrain Farnborough (I used to live in Bromley) is a bit hilly like round here.

At the moment with just under 1000 miles of city driving I am getting 34mpg, when properly run in I anticipate my MPG to be around 39 for around town. My fully run in 1.6TDI Fabia averaged for all journey types 50.4mpg, I am anticipating the bigger Octavia to finally achieve 44.1 for all journey types.

Because you are likely to use a tuning box then to allow for that option you have to go manual, the 7 speed dry DSG is rated to 250nm the max torque for the 1.4TSI. Using a tuning box you are then playing with what is the Nm safety margin for the 7 speed DSG.

Does the Fabia VRs use a different DSG box then, thats driving 180PS straight from the factory, I kinda figured 10% saftey margin so, the 7 speed should be good for 200PS which I wouldn't really expect to be passing, if I found I was, just re-fit the standard air filter.  You maybe right, I just really assumed it'd be the same gearbox.

BTW. Working for RM nowdays is proper Muslim yeah, in Noel Gallagher accent "shiite"

I'm sure it's the same, though we are talking about torque here not horsepower.

I think it is the same box as in the Fabia VRS and while the VRS produces more PS it also has the same torque as the 1.4 Octavia.

I am sure someone will be along to confirm this or not, but it will be the torque increase from a tune up that is likely to kill the DSG.

The more powerful engines get the 6 speed wet DSG.

Hmmm. I see your point however, the Fabia has been out for a while & its only available in DGS so, I've asked Andrew if he knows of any problems with any of the units sold to Fabia Vrs users. Whilst, I'm not entirely sure I fully understand what is ment by it the DTUK website does say "Improved low rev range Torque, which is ideal for towing & Suitable for Automatic Transmissions " see link :- http://www.diesel-performance.co.uk/vehicle-skoda_octavia_iii-1.4tsi-140ps

All DSG cars with 184lb/ft now use the 7 speed DQ200 box. That torque output is the electronic limit set on the box.

If you map a car with one of these boxes supposedly you'll never see more torque output than that despite a power increase unless you get the DSG ECU re-flashed as well.

I wouldnt want to run too much more torque through a DQ200 as they can be quite fragile

The fragile aspect of the dq200 dsg seems to be the mechatronic unit rather than the clutches. Hence the recall targeting aspects of the MU.

Well I'll find out when it arrives, Andrew says they've never had a problem making ANY VAG car faster, its got 14 Day Money Back Guarantee so, I've nothing to lose.

Give anything a go once & if I like it, I've been known to even do it again.

Let us know what you think when you get the box up and running.

Hi pipsp

I did a little research on the DQ200 & its fitted to the Fabia vRS too, Sparkly has told me he's running at 213bhp 366nm - 271ft lbs  torque and has no interference from the DSG box.
