BMW X5 DIESEL-Any body had or got one.

Featured Replies

As above really. I'm looking at buying one. Any info welcome good or bad.

Which one? We have a 12 registered 3.0xdrive. If you don't like a firm ride, don't get one with the sport suspension. Just does above 30mpg but that's mostly short journey's- will do mid thirties on longer journeys. It's a very relaxing car to drive and can shift if you require it too.

My old boy had a 56 plate x5 3.0d limited edition le manns blue on from new

Never had any issues with it. All that it ever required was new tyres and that was in 60k miles of ownership

Saying that he swapped it for a 335d as the indicator bulb blew :o

Thanks for replies. @ Big Jase that's the one I'm after. So no major worries then, just the usuall to look for.

There was no issues

All i can think of was the soft touch on the steering wheel chipped but that was more down to the old dear wearing rings etc

Need to make sure it has the optional extra indicator stalk as most beemers seem to be missing that,

Sorry couldn't resist

A mate of mine is a traffic bobby. They've got several diesel X5's on their fleet and most have around 300k miles on the clock. He's very complimentary of them, stating that they just go on and on and on despite the hard life they lead and no rattles either.

Hope this helps.

If you are after an early example then things to check for include the turbo (have a habit of failing at the 100K mark), suspension bushes, a rattly boot lid and the dodgy GM gearbox. Later versions use a ZF box but not sure if these are improved.

A nice thread here...

But loads more information specific to the X-model beemers here...

A friend has one with enormous wheels, which are extremely wide, consequently it is soooo bad in the snow it's funny.  Apart from that it's her second one and she hasn't had any real problems with either.

Make sure it comes with front distance sensors.

Not for parking but to keep the right distance (6 inch or so) off the chuff of the car in front.

That seems to what they're used for when I encounter an X5 :bandit:

The le mans x5 comes with front and rear sensors as standard

I remember seeing a review of a used one on 5th gear. One thing they said to check was that the tickover was rock steady. If it fluctuates theres a bill of around 1k looming IIRC.Apart from that I think they said it was a solid car.

My mate has a 2007 / 57 plate Lemans Blue one 3.0d For sale if your interested, its got 70k on the clock BMW service history :)

And they weigh a ton..  (40 odd Kilos each!) Have a set of winter 18" wheels - softens the ride a bit as well. Get them changed at BMW (too heavy to do myself)  who change and store them for £30 / half year.
