Amundsen - canton Sound System

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Picking my brand new Octavia vRS up on Saturday, very excited.

Because it was specced by the dealership Manager I am having it as is, only thing that I'm not 100% with is that it doesn't have SatNav, just the Bolero hooked up to the Canton Sounds.

So my question is, would the Canton work properly with the Amundsen SatNav? If I have one retro fitted?

Thanks everyone.

Can you spec the Canton on the configurator without adding Amundsen, if so it should be fine?

Not even sure upgrading the system is an option. I know one member has tried and failed to upgrade to Columbus, the problem is that the Octy3 uses canbus and fibre optics to connect some components. MOST has component protection, which stops parts being swapped between cars rather like the older code based system. Component protection needs to be removed by a main dealer, with a direct connection to VAG HQ which they maybe reluctant to do.

Someone mentioned on here that a company called vag-tec.com can do the swap (Bolero to Columbus). They charged just under £1,000 including the unit I think

Hey guys, I appreciate your input, thank you.

I'm due to speak to my Skoda man on Thursday so will get his opinion and report back for everyone's benefit.

Assuming its a no go, anybody recommend a SatNav?

I'm not sure if the Amundsen sat nav is like the golf and A3 systems but on the A3 at least any dealer can retro fit all it is is a simple SD card into existing unit and activation code

I hope it's that simple Kenny, cheers!

I got the Amsdun and Canton specced and ordered - thought it too much of a PITA to retro fit it.

I've not looked into it before for the octavia but a call to a knowledgeable dealer will help. No idea why but the a3 is that easy

So it doesn't need a GPS antenna or the NAV button to access the sat nav? Don't think so somehow....

As I say I don't know the set up of the octavia, but the A3 is a simple upgrade as the mmi is already there and antenna is already fitted

The skoda unit although very similar does look different I'm afraid

Not sure about retro fitting mate, but I picked up my VRs with Canton and Amundsen and I really really love everything about the car. Using the DAB with sound up is great, but I've found putting a bunch of music on a usb drive and playing it direct via the usb slot in the dash and turning it up is amazing. I'm a bit thrifty with unnecessary car use, but I just have to look out the window and find myself grabbing my shoes and going for a random drive!

Cheers guys, will report back, he's a great guy working for a wel respected dealer so if it can be done, I'm sure he will find a way.

a666syd, sounds like you're a happy bunny! I'm hoping for the same sort of feeling, I see no reason why not!

Hey guys, sorry to ask what seems like a totally 'noddy' question. (I only joined this forum last night) I'd like to send a personal message to someone (a guy that does software upgrades on this forum), but it is saying that I do not have permission to send personal messages. Any ideas why or what I need to do to resolve that? Do I need to just pay the £12 membership fee to be able to do that?

Mence, what's the complete spec you're getting?

Yes, I believe to access the full site features you need to buy access to freedom membership.

Think it's actually based on post count, though I have no idea what the thresholds are before PM is allowed. I'm not a Freedom member and I can PM people.

When the time comes for me to change I will certainly be speccing the Canton system.

I would also be ticking the box for the amunsden as i have on in my current car.

The main reason for choosing the amunsden is because of it's ability to play ogg files as the bolero in my last car would only play mp3.

Could anyone confirm if the new bolero would in fact play OGG files?

If it did then I could well live without the Amunsden and get some other toys instead.

Cheers

Hi Vectra1

According to my MK3 Octavia brochure, the Bolero does support OGG files.

To send a PM, you need to have reached a post threshold then you can send one. No need to join freedom, this is done because we have issues with spammers joining and sending junk PMs without posting at all.

So post an introduction in the introductory forum, reply to a few threads and you should be good to go.

Danger Will Robinson! Don't ever trust Skoda documentation. Only way to tell is by actually trying it.

Could somebody try it for me then please?? :)

I lurrrrrrve my canton / amundsen combo. Cant see why it wouldnt work equally good with the bolero tho. Amundsen is just additional nav (and possibly slightly larger screen or I might be making that up!)

Hi,

I paid for the Canton upgrade for my new Octavia Elegance company car, having previously had a decent Bose stereo in my last motor that could be cranked up loud enough to hurt and kick in your ribs without sounding strained.  However, the Canton system has not overly impressed me so far: I am noticing nasty rattling of the front door panels on bass notes at even modest volumes and even distortion of the door speakers.  This is all at no more than 70% of the volume and with the bass level just over the flat setting.  Generally the sound seems far too bright and harsh too and I'm feeling so far that the upgrade was not worth the money.

Has anyone else had experience of this or do I potentially have the "Friday afternoon" Canton upgrade?

Cheers.

Rich.

Canton is only the addition of a middle speaker and a subwoofer in the rear. The door speakers etc are the same as those without a canton so the vibrations from them aren't due to the canton as far as I'm aware.
