NEw to Site and need some help with Radio Upgrade please

Featured Replies

HI, everyone.

I have a octavia elegance tdi 55 plate but think its the o6 engine with the standard radio and cd changer (in boot) fitted and wish to upgrade to a bluetooth system so i can play my iphone 4s songs and also use the iphone telephone through the radio. Am wondering if there is such an upgrade.

Also, if i upgrade will i loose the cd changer functions / reverse sensor diagram / climit control diagrame and the information/diagram in the instrument panel.

Thanks

Do you have the stream radio? If so you need to upgrade to a bolero and fit a Bluetooth module and wiring loom+Mic. With coding should get the info display working. Cd changer might not work although the bolero had a six disc changer built in. I've done it in mine.

Hi Simon tdi,

Yes it is the stream unit I have. I guess I will need an auto spark to do all that work. Have you any idea how much the unit would cost and also how much to do it, thanks

You may lose the climate display and parking sensors and need a new CAN gateway if the bolero comes from a facelift car.

Thanks trundle nut but not sure what that means sorry :-(

The can gateway links all the various computers (engine, radio, climate, instruments etc.) together. Fitting a newer radio into an older car lead to problems with the battery draining. The radio doesn't have a switched live, only a permanent live, the can gateway tells the radio to turn off when the ignition is turned off.

Likewise a newer radio can't communicate properly with the older climate control and PDC, so you lose the display.

Ah right, is there any way around this do you know thanks

There is a software upgrade to the Columbus satnav units which can address the battery drain if you can find one of those, and bluetooth can be added relatively easily.

Or you could try an Amundsen+ which also has bluetooth built in. I'm not sure if the Amundsen units cause battery drain in the same way though, or if there is a similar fix if they do.

There is loads of info on here about upgrading these units if you do some searches, although you will need a healthy budget.

But I don't think there is an upgrade available for the bolero though.

Yes that's my understanding too.

I had heard of the ANS 810 i think it is ????

That's aftermarket but supposedly very good from what I have read. Some on here have it so worth asking about it.

Cheers Adam. I have to say i am a little confused as some say that it cant be done, some say it can but expensive and some say it can be done reasonable.

Not sure if i just try to get a device to make me iphone play my tunes through the system and just use phone also but that does not look or feel as good :-/

Just a thought, is it the Stream or the Stream MP3? It should say on the front of the stereo but, being an '05, I suspect it is the basic Stream unit.

The latter can be fitted with an Aux input that will allow your iPhone (or any device) to be connected via a 3.5 mm headphone cable.

I'm not sure if the MP3 version will allow BT connections via the addition of a VAG kit though.

Well different people have different ideas of expensive! If you have around 400 quid and willing to have a go at fitting you can go the Columbus route which definitely can be done even with your age car as others will testify. And it will be more like 550 if you want bluetooth too.

I think my unit is just a stream.... but would have to check to be sure.

So, i would be looking at around the 500 mark to have all i want set up and working.... And thats an average

I would say about that yes, maybe cheaper if you go for the Amundsen+ but I really can't advise as to whether that will work with your older gateway and not experience drain...

I couldn't find a definite answer but from what I gathered, the Amundsen also causes battery drain issues on older gateway revisions.  It would also need the different shaped trim as it's the same as the Columbus and different to the Stream/Bolero although if the car came with black trim then that wouldn't be expensive to get the new one.

Hi John, The car is in a black trim

A black fascia for the Columbus cost me just over £5 from the dealer about 2 years ago. Can't see it having gone up much since then.

Ok great and thanks

Yep, it still is cheap but I wasn't sure if Elegances came with something different to the black as the silver trim for the VRS can be surprisingly pricey.  Hence I didn't want to say it should be cheap in case it turned out it wouldn't be.

Thanks John,

I still need to try and make my mind up of what way i can/should go with this, there are so many options. Nothing simple eh!!!

I think this would make sense as the Amundsen is likely to use Canbus signals just like the Columbus (in the way Trundlenut explained).  The advantage of the Columbus is that software definitely exists for fixing the drain with it.  I'm not sure the same is true of the Amundsen, but if not an updated CAN gateway could still be used with the Amundsen.  There are some for sale on the for sale pages, although access would be needed to VCDS and relevant expertise for coding.
