2260vk or upgrade?

Featured Replies

Don't do it Paul, get yours remapped by faboka properly first!!

Has your cable arrived yet mate?

E46 330's aren't as powerful as the E90's are they? E90's are lovely but if I was going to get one it would have to be the 330 over the 320 or you'll end up in the same boat as you are now on weather to get a bigger turbo on the 320 when you get bored of it or change cars again lol. Don't see the point in going from a mapped Fabia to a 320 because the fabia would probably embarrass it unless it was mapped of course, even then I wouldn't think there'd be much in it. Obviously BM much nicer car mind ;)

Stock for stock the newest 184bhp 320d would win

I think the 184's map to 220/230

I would even say my 163bhp would edge a stock fabia

Its not just about the speed its the drive. A beemer hands down beats a fabia to drive in every which way :)

Also if you want go for the 325d e90

Pretty sure it has most of the 330d parts if not all of them. Only the mapping differs. So you save yourself 2grand over the 330d

couldn't agree more jase they are lovely to drive BUT, the OP is coming from a 196bhp fabia so going to a 320 is a bit pointless you get my point? With the BM being about 100kg heavier as well I don't think k there would be much in a Mapped 320 and the OP's fabia presuming hybrid

i drove a brand new 320d just before Christmas and i can honestly say it wasnt nice to drive at all it was very numb and there was no feel to the steering the brakes anything the only good thing about it was free road tax for a twin turbo 2.0 diesel .... i suppose if you put larger alloys on and got rid of the huggeee tyres it would tighten up abit

but lets be fair if you want a properly fast car that handles well you should be looking more along the scooby / evo line

I went from a 200bhp leon fr tdi to a 163bhp 320d

You do miss the shove but once you adapt their isn't really much missing. I actually drive a lot slower now as i feel i have nothing to prove.

I used to try and have quick blasts etc. but now when old clapped out mk4 golf chav buckets come flying up behind i just laugh and let them overtake. And theres a few of them round my way :)

I could map the bmw to 210bhp apparently. The newer one goes to 220/230bhp

325 and 330d are only the same engine thus same power remapped from 2010 onwards.

Interesting thread.

Unless you are seriously into your Fabia and have the spare cash it's probably not worth the cost to upgrade it further as you've already spent out to get it where it is.

Most of the cash you spend will be lost almost instantly.

Like I said, if you have a thing for the car and the cash to burn, why not?

There is always an argument for buying a more powerful car, because it means everything is designed to take that power and it also leaves more headroom for tuning.

You can achieve the same/more for a far smaller spend.

Would I buy a 320d?

No, if I am honest I wouldn't.

If you want a sensible car with decent handling, speed and economy then maybe it's fine.  It a family car and so is reasonably well rounded without excelling in any area.

Personally, if I was looking to get into a BMW it needs to be something that justifies the badge (IMO), so that would be a 330d.

Driving round in the budget/poverty spec version of any car doesn't really appeal to me, unless the important thing is the MPG.

I sunk about £19k into my Fabia VRS (including buying it) and sold it for £11k.

Jason has (I believe) sunk more into the Mongrel, but over a greater time span.

He has had the fun more spread out, I'd have been better buying a decent £20k car.

316d/318d are the bottom rangers :)

320d is a weapon in that respect!

Think the 316d has a measly 114bhp

Shows my lack of knowledge on BMWs.

I thought the 4 pots were the base models as BMW had a thing for smooth 6 cylinder engines.

I might be having a late midlife crisis but I'm seriously considering building a Westfield and getting rid of the bike altogether, I'll keep the Fab of course.

Go for it!
Bike engined kit cars are massive fun B)
I'm just starting building one now, a Mac1 which will be R1 powered ;)

The 316/318/320d are all 2.0l 4 pots in various states of tune

316 - 114bhp

318 - 140bhp

320 - 163/177/184bhp

There are slight differences between years. The orginal alpina D3 is also a 2.0l 4pot which uses a hybrid kindov turbo with the 330d turbo pushing 215bhp

Different cars, different classes of car. Different people, different uses. I recently drove a mates mapped 320d and is was lovely, nice and fun in the twisty bits but a ultra refine cruiser when you're just rolling along. For a daily I'd take it over the Fabia any day. For smashing round a track then I'd go hardcore on the Fabia, strip it, redistribute the weight, lsd etc etc but not the massive laggy turbo, just run your current one at 220-240bhp.

This has turned into a bit of a Bavarian Munchkin Werks thread now.

iipaul, you're 19 years old, stick with the Fab, don't go spastic on tuning, start saving your dosh, your mums going to want you out eventually, you might even meet a girl and WANT to move out!

Right I think I've made up my mind going to keep the fabia, get some decent use out of it and take the advice and save :) thanks for all the advice

I know someone selling a barely used GTB2260vk kit. ;)

I am in the middle of doing the gtb2260vk conversion and can't wait to get it finished

I came late to this but urge you to know that no one who is a member of a user forum is paying full price for a new BMW of whatever size .

There is a regular £7500 to £10,000 off the pcp terms with or without part ex. sorry that's for a 330D or 335D.

if you want to buy a BMW , particularly theF30, trawl through the F30post web site.

I got £7500 off my March 2014 335D order as a result of seeing what others had done. the record appears to be 22 per cent off!

still an expensive car but low emissions and 40 mpg should be achievable in Eco or Comfort mode - it also has sport and sport plus which could be renamed "lose your licence" mode! Most people have gone crazy with extras but I kept to a simple adaptive suspension, variable steering and electric memory seats.
