I blame Spielberg. He forced them out of retirement to make an otherwise average sequel, and now they're probably demanding some sort of 3D (or it it 4D now?) come back.

My 170 DSG estate has also started doing this.  Are the previous posts cured?

Mine does it every now and again, very annoying!

Mine used to do it quite often but its very rare now. I reckon its something to do with the park switch. I used to put my bag in the boot, but now at work I reverse up to a hedge, and being a log car I parl right up to it. Therefore I put my bag behind the drivers seat. The other day I used the boot again for a change and it did the wiper thing. So my guess is slamming the lid moves the wiper out of the park position.

Does that correspond with anyone else findings?

Interesting, so a possible theory...

Slamming the boot moves the wiper arm slightly.

When turning on the ignition the car detects that the wiper isn't in it's usual park / rest position and therefore thinks the ignition was turned off mid-sweep?

It therefore thinks it needs to park the wiper and performs a single sweep which then parks the wiper properly... until another hard boot slam?

.....and all the way down in New Zealand I have the same problem, occasionally. I have an electric tailgate, so can't slam the boot, but Silver1011 might be onto something! Could it be related to the torch light flashing in reverse problem?

bit of a thread bump but this explains why mine does it.

always runs the wiper on ignition if the boot has been opened previous to ign on

I think i figured something out.

I have a superb mk2 estate and it does this start sweep when the ignition was turned off and the wiper was slightly up from its normal position.

If get it down so its leveled with the glass on the back it won't do it on the start.

So when I turn the wiper on while driving it completes his sweep and when it gets back it goes up like 0.8 inch. If it stayed down it wouldn't do the start sweep. Now the big question is how to get it down to normal position because I tried and couldn't find a pattern.

Yes you are correct the problem is caused when the rear wiper isn't parked correctly!  More often than not the rear wiper bounces back up from the park position as in the the photo and then the rear wiper always activates when I start the engine!

Very occasionally the rear wiper stops where it should! As in the second photo. When my rear wiper stops in this position then it never activates when I start the engine.

It is a bit hit and miss but you can force the rear wiper to park correctly by putting the rear wiper switch on with the ignition on and just before the wiper reaches the bottom of it's stroke turning the ignition off and stopping the rear wiper. Then turn the rear wiper switch off.

I've just learned to live with it and avoid using the rear wiper when it's parked correctly.

IMHO the issue is with the rear wiper motor. Maybe there is something that can be done to the rear wiper motor to correct the problem? I thought that maybe it could be down to wear in the drive gears causing backlash. But I can't get my  wiper arm to move in either direction when I try to move it by hand. So it must be something to do with the self park mechanism in the motor housing?

There seems to be some misconception by some people what the Maxidot screen rear wiper function is for. It's not for disabling or  turning the rear wiper off.

When the rear wiper function is selected when the front wipers are working and you select reverse the rear wiper turns on for one wipe.

It makes sense really, you're in a busy car park and it's tipping it down with rain the front wipers are working you select reverse gear and then realise the rear visibility isn't great ! To save you the inconvenience of faffing around and turning the rear wiper on it's already done it :-)

Yes and it seem that i can park the rear wiper correctly only when car is stationary, when its moving the wiper always ends in the up position.

Only try doing the above while the car is safely parked should have said ! :-)
