What to check on my new car?

Featured Replies

So the new car arrives at the dealers this week and I was wondering what I should check prior to accepting it. Some things will be the same for all new cars, some for the Octavia and some for the specific model (Elegance 2.0Tdi Estate, race blue with sunset glass, spare wheel and winter pack). I know I'll be too giddy when I go to collect it so it would be nice if I could get a list together beforehand that I could follow to ensure I give the vehicle a thorough check before accepting it.

Giddy is good, I was and forgot to check a few things but fortunately, no nasty surprises. It's a special day picking up a new motor, enjoy!

Any half decent dealer should walk you through all of it before handover.

Obviously check that over and above the standard trim, anything you have specced is present, correct and working as it should, a good check of the bodywork won't go amiss especially if it's spent any time in the showroom (people rubbing against it, children etc.)

I would also ask questions if there is anything more than a handful of miles on the clock, make sure it hasn't been used for the daily sandwich run.

Washers not fully retracting.

There was also a few posts about the seal of the rear lights, however I think it was vRS specific.

Previous post on same subject brought up some suggestions. Make sure you check the paintwork in good daylight & from all angles. Mine still had the glue where they attach transport protection in places - crap PDI. The rear light seals not fitting tightly to the bodywork, visible when hatch lifted is not VRS specific, but I think as you are getting an estate they are a different design. There are some photos in a previous thread.

Overall don't be rushed, it should be OK but it has been on transporters, a train, a ship etc where minor mishaps can happen.

Also check all the lights, I recall a member found a faulty headlight driving home & he had all sorts of problems getting it replaced.

Hopefully all will be well & enjoy your new car.

Another thought as you are getting a spare check that there is a toolkit, jack etc. Mine was missing the tool for removing wheelnut covers & the small wire (thingy) for pulling rear light cluster cover off.

Give the roof rails a glace, I've seen them scraped by transport companies due to incorrect loading and unloading.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Please keep them coming. Think I read somewhere to check the SD card is present?

Someone made a quite extensive checklist:

I think a number of the points on there is mostly suitable for used car handover, but its a great starting point.

The things I specifically checked were:

  1. Paint finishing. I think 2 members have actually received cars that should never have left the factory! Check near the upper corners of the windscreen especially
  2. B-pillar gap: A (large) number of members have had issues with gaps between the window trimming and the B-piller, potentially allowing loads of water to enter the door.
  3. B-pillar scratches: Some PDI's seem to be removing the transport cover from the B-pillar with a rotary sander. At least a couple of members have complained that their B-pillers look like it.

Generally Just check everything that moves!

Here is a topic with some more known issues mentioned. Some design features are mentioned as well tho, such as the passenger mirror moving when you adjust the drivers side mirror. This is actually a feature you can disable through the radio!
