Auxiliary belt refitting help

Featured Replies

Hi.

After completely rebuilding the front end of my Son's Fabia (we bought it as a Cat C), we took it for a VIC. It drove beautifully, but sadly, after just 30 miles, it died.

After much stripping etc, it turned out that the top timing chain bolt had worked loose, allowing the oil drop gear to move out, letting the woodruff key fall out and get mashed up.

We've refitted the timing chain and timing chain cover after making a new woodruff.

After doing all this complicated stuff, we are now struggling to fit the aux belt.

The car has a/c, and therefore, the automatic tensioner.

Does anybody have a way of refitting the belt, without the special tool to release the tension?

Many thanks.

Don't you just use a spanner to rotate the tensioner? Then a 5mm drill bit to lock it.

There is no way to rotate the tensioner. I think that's the case on the none a/c versions.

on the tdi's with a/c you can put a spanner on tensioner and rotate it

Most tensioners. Put a spanner on the nut holding the pulley onto the tensioner to allow you to rotate it :)

Just mind your fingers haha

What engine?

It's a 1.4MPi, with a/c.

The tension wheel is bolted on using a very small torx screw, so no leverage there.

The tensioner goes through the a/c and alternator bracket, to a large black circular thing, which in turn is bolted to the bracket using 2 allen key bolts. I can see it it designed to take a special tool to lever it, but I don't have one, neither can I find one.

Completely different to the diesel engines then, bugger.

On the large black thing there is a square hole take the allen key bolt out to get a better leverage get a 3/8 long extension bar and warm it up and hammer it to the size of the hole put it in the hole and put the ractket on it and pull it as hard as you can towards the bumper then slip it over the tensioner

Hope this helps

Tom
