Strange Noise Coming From Back Of Car

Featured Replies

Since about September the back end of the car is making a strange noise ( same kind of noise when you wiggle your finger infront of you and blow on it ), this has happened about four times  now. Since it first started I have had a new exhaust put on and put the winter tyres on so I know these 2 things are not the problem. It happens whatever speed I am doing.  On Saturday the noise did seem louder and lasted longer when I was doing 60mph.

exhaust heat shield?

That is THE most awesome and accurate description of a noise I've yet seen, unfortunately I have no idea what it could be...

Difficult to do when you are not face to face.

Rear brakes stuck on?

Does it get really loud?

Hostage in the boot?

Is it definitely coming from the rear? Cars have a habit of misleading people sometimes. Is it worth checking the undertray? I lost a couple of screws and that flapped around quite a bit

Have you got child seats in the back ?

Could have left your baby in it and it is making that noise to entertain itself :P

nah. Sounds like something loose underneath as others have said

*wiggles finger in front while blowing.

Nope, no idea bud :(

does it speed up and slow down with rev's or speed?

Oh... have you checked the tyres? Swap them front to back and see if the noise changes.. incase there's a flatspot or a bit of damage to the alloy or tyre.

The plastic shroud that keeps muck out of the rear shock detached from the bump stop perhaps?

It does sound like air is getting into something and making it flap. Last service the car had I was told the Tie Rods ( Rack ends ) need replacing , could this be it?.

I wonder how many people instantly wiggled their finger in front of their mouth while blowing. I know I did.

I did

Are you sure it's not the wife/girlfriend?

had a thought; when you get this sound, is the drivers window slightly open? If so it could be the seatbelt flapping in the breeze.

if your cars the estate model mines does that noise if someone has their window open its the slider thing to hide whatever is in the boot.

LOL at the description... IMO could be tyres or a scuffing mechanically - brakes, or even the airflow flapping something...

...Unless you've a stalker int he boot blowing across a wiggly finger - LOL.

I think there's a Tesco carrier bag trapped under the car somewhere...

My Wife's gone missing   :notme:

Took the car in for a service a few weeks back .Couple of hours later the mechanic phoned back asking if the fuel consumption was down  I said not noticed , he then told me the rear roadside brake calipar was solid still , how did you move the car he asked. In 25 yrs as a mechanic he has never seen a calipar which would not move, he said car that has  not moved for years are not as mad as this. Brake pad was well worn too.
