Accident: So how many years NCD do i lose?

I think i had 17years of NCD (iirc)

and i do know some insurers just log a max number of years like 5.

I claimed last year Nov 2013.

Passenger window smashed and stereo stolen.

Excess £250 paid.

I spoke to insurer to query how years i would lose (i have no NCD protection),

and how many years of NCD have they logged me as having.

They said 17 (iirc) + and at most knock a few years off after my claim.

I am happy with that - surely at worse it will NOT come down to single digits NCD?

Renewal letter arrived.

£350

After 3 years NCD

Wtf?

Interesting to know how many have others lost?

Your policy should tell you how many years NCD you have and how that reduces in the event of claims. NCD is not necessarily the same as the number of years you have been driving without making a claim.

Most companies cap the NCD percentage after a certain number of years so whether you have 5 years or 50 it makes no difference.

Last time I looked it was

1  = 30%

2  = 40%

3  = 50%

4  = 60%

5+= 70%

A claim without protected NCD will normally drop you down two bandings.

When I wrote my car off in 2008 I got knocked down to 3 years after having 6. As Dr Zoid has posted, the most you ever have is 5.

How much was your stereo if you don't mind me asking? The reason I ask is the window wouldn't affect your NCB so I'd have been tempted to just take the hit with the stereo and buy one off ebay, then you'd still have your NCB.

Even if you have been 17years without claims, usually Max NCD is 9 years. Usually 1 claim on 9years ncd would reduce you to 4years ncd. If it's any comfort to you the majority of your discount comes from the first three years. Most of anything over that is tiny and wouldn't have much impact on the loading for you making a claim.

Because it wasn't accidental damage by stone damage glass does count against you.

Your insurance policy will explain better.

Sometimes protected ncd is worth the money - in my case £15 extra.

It wasn't "accidental damage" of the glass, it was caused by theft or attempted theft.

Therefore the claim would fall to be settled under that section of the policy, which would result in the loss of (part of as explained in the policy) your NCD.

But that will cost MORE than £15!!!

Lol

That's fine as long as it doesn't cost more than the extra protected NCD costs for your location minus the £15 it would cost x the number of years you intend to keep driving for during the rest of your life. Could work :D

Bear in mind your renewal will likely go up next year as well as the increase from the loss of NCD. It's a double wammy present from the ins company.

Well

Had a long chat on phone to eSure today.

They confirmed i did have 17years

and thy do record upto 20years NCD,

But,

Due to my one claim its all gone down to 3years.

Still they were only £60 more and they thrown in Business miles for free,

and confirmed any factory fitted optional extras will be covered.

So i renewed with them.

  • 2 weeks later...

that's ridiculous they can take so many years off it though. I know ultimately it's not much different for you, but still!

I was coming up to 3 years NCB this year, but had a fault claim in december. My renewal is going to be £1000 (was £540 last year) as they will likely take both years NCB away!

The worst bit is that i did a quote with my accident etc - £1000 and then a quote with 1years NCB and it goes down to £550.... just insane and extremely frustrating. Literally no idea how they can warrant that.
