Replacing the fuel and oil filter 1.4 16v elegance

Featured Replies

Can anyone give me a quick guide to replacing the fuel and oil filter?

Fuel filter is under the car near the tank and is the throwaway cartridge type, oil filter is also throwaway and is behind the exhaust manifold and can only be done from underneath, suggest a strap wrench for the oil filter as it's a bit of a bugger.

Oil filter needs a socket to fit the built in protruding hex head on the filter, nice & easy,I think its about 30 or 32mm, need to check.

Fuel filter is under the rear drivers side door area, also the fuel filter needs to have the single rusted in screw for the plastic retaining strap soaked in penetrating fluid! The screw rusts in very easy & then the brittle plastic strap breaks when you try to undo it............. :wall: .............managed to drill mine out & fit a stainless screw, but on my mates I ended up using a couple of strong cable ties....just like the dealers do!....

Also remember to bleed the fuel rail after fitting the filter, just look for tyre valve on the end & press the pin in & use an old rag to soak the fuel up, only needs to be done a bit.

I couldn't get a socket or spanner on my oil filter, I'm guessing you removed the heat shield, I couldn't, hence the strap wrench from below as I suggested.

Strange that your fuel filter is in a different place to mine.

Didn't have to remove any heat shield..........I can get access from either above or below..but below is better.....the fuel filter should be in the same place as mine which is behind the chassis rail (so to speak) right under the middle of the rear door on the drivers side

Whoops, my bad, I misread and thought you meant the drivers door rather than the O/S/R passenger door, same place, we're good.

Maybe check which fuel filter you have as my wife's Polo has a filter+regulator assembly and it has been suggested on one of these forums, that after a few years, while ideally you only need to replace the filter, the body of the regulator will have become so rusted up that it will never seal when reconnected to the new filter. It seems that VAG have changed things, on my daughter's 6J Ibiza 1.4 16V, the filter includes a regulator, could be that VAG has learned a lesson here, although the regulator end has "4 Bar" stamped on it, I think that the earlier cars were "3 Bar".
