Subwoofer for 2012 VRS hatch

Featured Replies

Had a quick browse but couldn't find any threads where a subwoofer has been added to one of the boot side compartments.

Has anyone doine this and if so which sub diid you use and how easy is it to wire to a columbus?

Looking to add some low frequency to supplement the standard system.

If I bought a subwoofer, what can I expect an ICE specialist to charge to install?

Thanks

if you can't buy an off the shelf box then a shop/specialist will not be cheap.

To make a box to fit in one of those compartment you'd need so make a fibreglass back moulded to the shape. Remove it from the car then start adding layers of fibreglass to gain strength. Then add the front, shaped from mdf to match the car then start sanding untill its all smooth. Then trim the box and cut a hole for the speaker wire to go through.

Its not a small job thats for sure.

You'd have to use an amp plus a high level input to create some RCA's to go into the amp from the headunit.

Best bet is to ask installers for a price but if you bought a sub £100 sub I'd be shocked if you have change from £500 once all meterials, labour etc is paid for

Really? That seems quite steep to install.

I'll have a measure up of the recess and find something to fit

Thanks

not steep at all when you think of the work which has to go into it.

Might worth having a look and seeing if there are any off the shelf boxes, commonly known as "stealth boxes". Also ask an installer for a price, you might find someone a bit cheaper but fitting a sub isnt as simple as it might appear, especially if you want to retain the oem headunit

I'll have to consult a iCE specialist then, but if it gets too costly I will probably settle for what I've got

One of the guys (mountainbikemike???) in the Skoda section of VWwatercooled did a custom box for the LHS indent.  You might want to have a browse there.

Thanks Brad will have a look there

All the best down under!

A good place to go also would be talkaudio.co.uk

Ask on there as most of the uks top installers are regulars

thats exactly what you seem to be after. Its not a massive enclousure so dont expect huge amounts of bass but will certainly be cheaper than someone building one for you

it will to an extent although you wont find an active sub which is designed to go in the space you are after.

With an active sub you will still need to feed a power cable, find an earth, sort a remote (switched live) and sort the RCA's out so you wont be saving that much effort

Blimey this is getting too complicated

Will I be better off changing the head unit to give a better sound, and one with pre outs?

you can do, but if you get anything other than the couple designed for use in vag cars you will loose all the features which link the headunit to the car such as the graphic for reversing sensors, radio info on maxidot etc

are there any decent HU compatible with maxidot and mfsw that is as good or better but not silly money?

Thanks

depends what you mean not silly money.

there is a kenwood model which im not sure on the cost but it wont be cheap

I've seen some kenwoods and pioneers going for just shy of £1k!!

never had the urge to mod when i had company cars, this is a very expensive pastime

the pioneer headunits for around the 1k mark are the reference range. No use to you at all, purely for SQ

I think the kenwoods are around the £500 mark

Does it have to be a stealth unit out to the side, in the past I just had a basic 10" Sub unit that fitted into the back of the seats, the back of the sub was angled.

Fitted it with a couple of easily removable plugs for the audio feed so I could remove / fit in seconds.

Amp fitted where you want to place the sub unit.

Unless you want to use all the boot space often is a good way, allows for a nice big box and speaker unit. I do wonder how much you can get from a small unit like the one on ebay. Be good to hear one first at a show or something.

I went through all this. In the end I just decided the boot on the car is absolutely huge anyway and bought an active bass tube amp and dropped it in the side of the boot. I had it wired on a single quick release plug so that if I needed the space I could unplug and lift it out. I think I have only needed to do that once in the year I've had it.

You won't get much noise from the small fitted one off eBay with high level RCA outs from a columbus head unit. I didn't want a massive booming noise, but even so without pre outs you need a half decent size box. Mine has a separate control wired through under the dash to control bass output without messing about in the boot and cost about 250 all in.

think I may go for one of these:

 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pioneer-TS-WX610A-Bandpass-Spare-Subwoofer/dp/B003USW08E/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1390154981&sr=1-1&keywords=Pioneer+TS-WX610A

or these:

I beleive you can tap into the speakers from the HU and all cable are supplied, though I will probably get an ICE chap to do it for me.

Now just have to go and earn some bonus to pay for it!

Try visual ice in Rotherham or subtronix in Mansfield.

Visual ice does some impressive boxes and can be found on eBay & fb etc
