Wax/Sealer removal (Update)

Featured Replies

I often get asked what to use to dewax the car prior to new application or polishing

Today..it stopped raining long enough to do a quick try out with neat APC and some IPA.

I firstly taped off half the bonnet, then liberaly sprayed the half bonnet with neat All Purpose Cleaner (APC)

....wiped it in with a sponge applicator pad and dried with a MF Towel.

Then applied some 50:50 Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) to another applicator pad and dried off with a buffing MF cloth

Then sprayed the bonnet with water to see the result:

Very happy..Weather permitting, will be doing the whole car tomorrow ready for applying my new sealer:

Autobrite Hellshine 'The Abyss' Synthetic Sealant....a perfect partner for Sonax Quick Sealant/QD

  • Well..It cleared and 2.5 hours later.. The car is now fully decontaminated of any wax at all and is squeaky clean ready for sealer   Car was liberally sprayed with APC and Fairy liquid applied via

  • I think you have read the same detailing article i was directed to mate - i was shocked when the guy did the IPA wipedown!!! But a few people have indicated this is the case long before now - Fairy l

You're a star Chris. My Mums car needs de-sealing as the Nissan dealers idea of applying it was frankly 5hit*

Just need this weather to sort itself out.

* I was on holiday when she bought the car or I'd have done it myself. Needless to say that the sales chap got a right earful from me when I found out.

Nice work Chris, very helpful.

Look forward to the results using the Abyss.

Weather permitting :smirk:

Where do we get this APC stuff then?

Before I spray Jif or Vim all over my car in March!

Chris...I know that the APC can be got almost anywhere but not so the IPA. I dont want to get it from Amazon as I've had problems with them in the past, and I dont know HOW to deal with ebay. Dont any of the usual car care suppliers (CYC, Polished Bliss etc) sell it?

Many thanks.

Mike.

I have some G3 Ixtar Wax Remover as well...Given to me by a Nissan Salesman, advertising G3 Ixtar  Ceramic Sealer

(My winter alloys have that on them)

Probably going to use that tomorrow as its a little stronger whist remaining safe to use

I've got some 'Carlack car care complete', cleanser and protectant in the garage, originally used to clean and seal the car prior to waxing.

Will this be suitable for removing the current layer of wax / QD? If there is any wax left since summer last year! Been using Sonax QD since then as it's amazing.

If not I'll be using APC and this carlack which may be going overboard!

Have you ever tried lemon juice to remove wax/sealer?

Doubt it

Its a cleaner polish with fillers

I haven't Tom, but imagine it might do something

Have you?

No, but I was talking to a geezer at a bodyshop who was complaining about the strong alkali based waxes, a bit of lateral though later and I was imagining using slightly acidic solvent to neutralise it.

The neighbours already take the **** at my car cleaning, rubbing it with lemons will just seal the deal for them!

Remove the pips or you'll scratch it :giggle:

I actually might try this on a section tomorrow...Watch this space

Cheers. Came in a bundle with the wax I bought. Need some APC then.

Sainsburys, Keighley...25p

To remove wax you need a detergent.

Hot water and fairy liquid will do the job 100%, if your going to reapply, SRP/wax/sealer afterwards i can't see it mattering.

Seems a cheaper option.

I know I can use fairy liquid ...I have done in the past...many many times.....but this is more effective.

Cost of about a 20p to do the whole car...LOL

Fairy liquid, awesome! Cheap, not as cheap as lemons though.

Thought some uber exotic wax off elixia would be required.

Last time I used JUST Fairy Liquid. It took 3 washes to get anywhere near removing the old wax...even then it was still beading slightly

My method is quicker and more effective

I would follow this up with a claying as well to make doubly sure it's contaminent free

Awwwww. So what the chuff is APC exactly.

So far I have figured that it's not the one to move troops around in. But that's it.

Daisy and the like are used for a multitude of detailing jobs, easily the cheapest and most effective thing you'll have in your arsenal after H20 :)

Take care with dilution though
