Has anyone disabled the VRS sound generator?

Featured Replies

I think the diesel soundaktor sounds great....can get wearing if not in the mood but it gives the TDI a purposeful noise....I also love how its output varies depending on throttle load and that the noise completely dissapears between gear changes. Its clever and unless you knew it was artificial I dot think people would give it another thought.

The only thing that does annoy me about it is that within a few thousand miles its created a bloody annoying dash rattle which does my head in without the stereo being on.

  • Well, you can deactivate through VCDS, no need for the spanner...

  • Can this be done without removing the wipers? I tried it a few weeks ago and the wipers seemed to be in the way....

Hi all, I think this is the best thread I found to post my temporary (but working well) solution for "making me bad" ratling while driving at rapid acceleration.

I was so nervous hearing this stupid sound and dismantle the under windshield area and removed wiper mechanism. As I can see, the issue is with the metal plate for alarm sound, where it is screwed at bottom by 2 screws, but the upper end is held in the air... In case of using sound generator it vibrates a lot. For my trial I used small microfiber cloth to lock entire thing in any position. After reassembly this back, went to testdrive.

The "clear" sonund, without ratttling is the best thing Iever made in this car. BTW - any ideas - how to lock in proper way the plate?

this will sound daft as I'm not a petrol head is all of this noise stuff fake?

Finally (1 1/2) years into ownership got round to getting rid of the fake V6. The TFSI isn't a rough engine, so quite happy to be au naturel,

Best move ever- thanks for the guidance! The car is quieter and I can hear the engine working, which I like as part of the [real] experience.

At my second service, I asked for the Dealer to disable the sound generator, this they could not do, but they did reduce the volume to 0, which was the same thing to me..result is the car is much quieter and its not obvious to my passengers when I put it in sport mode now and its much better for it in my opinion. Each to their own, but the generator was only a 5 minute "wow" for a long term annoyance drowning out the radio and making the car a noisy place to be..maybe I am just getting old?! :notme:

The sound generator doesn't just follow revs, it seems to have some sort of algorithm that looks at throttle and revs and I hated it as you can't fully hear the engine which you need to if you're giving it berries so I unplugged the damn thing.

Is this active on all Octavias or only the VRS-ones?

I just picked up a 2016 1.4 TSI 150hp (Style Combi which they call the estate model with highest number of extras, in Denmark. ), and the engine sound in sport mode is quite nice...

In fact it sounds just a bit too powerful. But it could be because sport mode lets it rev up, way higher than normal mode does?

Of course I'm going to spend the next few weeks driving with a lot of friends etc. that want to listen to "how well it runs".... and I don't want to go around bragging about the nice sound it makes, if it comes from a stupid built in "speaker".

Welcome, Timusius. Only vRS.

Can somebody please confirm if you get the Vrs mode button and sound generator in the mk3 diesel Vrs Octavia?

Thanks

Yep it's on my 16 plate vRS TDI. Eco keeps it off, normal driving mode gives a little sound, whereas Sport gives a V6 type growl through the speakers. Very odd when you first hear it as you know it's doesn't sound like that on the outside!

You can keep the sport settings in individual mode and just turn the engine noise off.

V6 growl? Sounds more like a J reg Transit van IMO.

Hmmmmm - it's far from a standard Diesel engine note

I've got my tiny hands to the generator.....but the plug - does it pull straight down or does something need pressing to release it??

Ta for any help!

For MY2016 this video is correct.

Mine was set at 69.8%.

I reckon is sounds more like a boxster engine.

Love the car sound after disabling the noisy thing. So much nicer to floor it.(RS230)

Might have to enable it at 69.8% again. The dealer wants to film the car and the experience. Not sure if I'm in on it though.

You need to squeeze it on the sides to release the clips before you pull. Should be little tabs.

Well after the dealer failed to disable it I've bit the bullet and got busy.

So here is a how to....

There are 4 x clips at the front of the plastic panel at the top of the engine which surrounds the wipers. Pull these off.

Now gently unclip the panel from the base of the windscreen working from the right.

You will then see this.

The sound arrow points to the sound generator and the circled plug need to be unplugged from the socket in the same circle.

Tidy up with a cable tie and job done.

Really helpful post. I unplugged mine in 2 minutes and much prefer the natural engine sound.

I had mine disabled when I had the remap - much prefer the natural engine noise. It sounds much better than I expected.

Been appreciating it whilst blasting through the Lincolnshire countryside. Off home today - I wonder how many dawdlers I'll need to overtake on the way?

it's as simple as turn it off on head-unit, even I worked that one out! no need to pull the engine compartment apart :D

Early models didn't have the option within the infotainment. So your options are unplug or VCDS.

Turned out it was 7.

Add another 6 for the short strip of dual carriageway in Louth.

A very "brisk" drive back with many many WOT moments, 120 miles and 34mpg. Can't complain at that. And no fake noise, just the sound of the 230 exhaust which I swear is getting more vocal now (13k miles).

Can you share the steps to run it off from the head unit?

If the kids keep making a VRS sound in the back use this method:

i did it in individual mode, put everything to sport except the sound generator, I put that on minimum and it's OK now.
