How to store tyres?

Featured Replies

Is there a good/better way to store tyres?

The universe has truly conspired against me and on last Thursday i decided to take the plunge and buy some Uniroyal Rainsport 3s and fit them to my car.

On Friday morning said car was crashed into and will probably be written off.

The tyres will come for Mrs Pasty's car (or a potential Fabia/Ibiza replacement for me) but what's the best way to store them?

I'd probably prefer the sace saving of lying them on their side and stacking them 4 high but guess they'd squash?

Assuming stood up on the tread is the safest way?

I doubt they'd squash under their own weight. I stored some winters for 3 months like that and they were fine.

Once fitted and inflated they would reshape anyway.

Ive got my spare conti's resting on the rafters in the garage and i rotate them every now and then.

Just keep out the sun.  Any other factor is pretty much not worth bothering about.

Out the Sun, and preferably at an even temperature and humidity. But out the Sun is way most important given that there's no weight on them.

Tyres: stood up.

Wheels: on their side, best on a wheel tree.

And yes, out of the sun.

Tyres without rims are not really a problem as they are relatively light, as Jason indicated.

As long as they are out of the sun they should be fine.

Question asked and question answered.

I only wondered as you alsways see tyres placed with them stacked up in racks on their treads rather than their sides.

not such a problem for the tyre places as they don't have the wheels on (in?) them and they aren't on the racks for that long.

Dont put them in the bathroom, apparently thats not a suitable place for wheels and tyres even if they are drying after a shower.

This hasn't gone down well at home, 4 x 18" tyres sat in my hallway :D

I've currently got some in the back bedroom.

Along with 4 freshly powder coated 16" Octavia spiders, a rear spoiler, an ecu set, cold air feed tubing and what's left of the old wiring loom :D

Just directional I believe, Vredstein Ultrac Sessantas

I take that back, asymmetric? They have an inner and outer side not a direction :)

looks like asymetric and directional to me. If you turned one round the tread would be the wrong way, if you follow

Yeah I follow, but there's an arrow pointing both ways, so not directional. Although tread does look backwards lol

Ive just ordered 2 of these as my brother currently has 3 sets of wheels, going to mount them on garage wall up out the way, 100 each though but im sure can be used for other things in future

So okay, I'll be the one who asks, why did you give your tyres a shower? and where you in the shower with them? is this some weird fetish I've not heard of before?
