So the Octy has had her first brush with another car (incidentally my first RTC - not a pleasant experience!!!). I'll update this post with pictures in the morning when the light is a little better.

This was around a 5 mph shunt (I hit the car infront).

On first inspection I thought I'd gotten away with it, but under spotlight it would seem not. The grill has disintegrated leaving a gaping hole where it used to be, the LHS headlight had pushed into the wing slightly (but has subsequently pushed back out & back into place).

However the bumper just doesn't 'look' right. It doesn't seem to be sitting correctly. There are no visible cracks or dents even, it just looks like it's pushed in on itself. There seems to be a large dense foam section just behind the bumper, visible directly below the grill aperture, encapsulating the intercooler, this foam piece has split along its length.

Could anyone with the correct software bring up an exploded view of the Octy VRS front bumper and what sits beneath it please as I need to get an idea of what could be under there & what damage has occured that I can't see.

Out of curiosity, how much do you guys think Skoda will want to supply and fit a new bumper and grill?

Many thanks in advance.

Bugger, sorry to hear that, seems unfortunate for a 5mph impact as thought bumpers were designed to absorb that unless the angle had played a part.

Hope you get it sorted without shelling out silly money, think I saw something posted on here that Skoda wanted £160 to fit a new grille and it was a bumper off job so that may give you some idea on fitting.

If you go on super skoda, they have a alternative mk3 RS grill which would suit your car! If a genuine replacement is far too expensive

I would get them to check the alignment of everything and make sure everything underneath and behind the grill is not bent!

But skodas are Tanks ! Lol!

Thanks for the tips, I'll check it out!

Where do I stand with insurance, PCP, warranty et al? Do I need to get Skoda to carry out the repairs or can I go elsewhere?

Oh a new genuine rs bumper would probably be around the 300-500 quid mark!

I got rear-ended when i had my Toyota auris SR by a ford Ka my auris had a new bumper and rear centre beam panel

and that was a grand ! Without painting! The Ka was a complete right off and that was only about a 35mph crash

Modern cars vs OLD i say new car 1 old car 0

What damage to the other car if you did that at 5mph?

Bad news, I feel for you.

Hope you can her sorted ok.

You can have it done by a skoda authorised repair centre but id recommend you only use who they say and authorised parts, otherwise they can invalidate your warranty ! Which would effect the pcp as the car would not be returned in original condition which could lead to a big bill !

If all is fixed correctly and done by skoda or a authorised garage all will be fine and as if nothing has happened!

If the person you hit chooses to claim through your insurer then unfortunately you have to take a hit there but

They may also be happy to settle without going through an insurer i.e cash or paid garage bills

This saves your no claims and your renewals being effected! And in the end both of you get your cars sorted without much paperwork or phone calls to your friendly insurers indian call centres!!

From the assessment at the side of the road, not even a scratch but we will see when he goes to a garage tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice.

At the moment he's being very amicable which is a credit to him, not sure I'd have been so calm! I offered to cover any repairs and he seemed happy to do so, so fingers crossed there!

Sorry to here about your misfortune, hope you get it sorted soon.

Cheers.

What would be ppeople's advised course of action now? Go straight to Skoda and just get them to see what needs to be done? Take it to an indy for the same evaluation only - not the repair? (I'd be getting a Skoda approved garage and genuine replacements parts for the repair)

The front of cars have the crumple zone so are designed to bend in and break to absorb the impact. Backs of cars are not as absorbent to crashes hence you came off worse.

I have just dropped my bmw off for a new M sport front bumber as touched a post in a car park while reversing at nonspeed really going to cost £825 as they have to paint it etc. Problem with modern cars is the plastic bumbers, once they bend in or break unlike metal its very hard to shape agian ...hence new bumbers normally..

Yikes, I've got a wedding and a house move to pay for in the coming months, the wallet's going to feel the burn!

Bad luck.... I'd be really surprised if there was much damage at that speed. Funnily enough, I was cleaning the grill the weekend and thought how cheap and brittle it felt. I know it seems odd but i'd be surprised if an aftermarket one was any worse quality.

I guess when you know more about the repair cost to yours and the other car you'll be able to plan your actions. Don't mean to be funny but have you checked that you've not insured your insurance aka protected your no claims bonus? If so,  you can usually claim a few times in a few years so i'd be inclined to claim and get everything done by the book. Good luck with it.

Modern bumpers are designed to crumple really easily absorbing energy and giving pedestrians better protection.

This thread should give you a better idea of the cost of the new bumper and what might be needed.

Either way you go your insurance will increase, protecting your discount only protects the discount. You still have to declare an accident within 5 years and that will increase the insurance before the discount is applied.

Ouch

Thanks for the link.

By the looks of it then I'll need a new bumper (bumper cracked and grill smashed to pieces) the small panel that sits above the bumper. Is the external temperature sensor located towards the front of the LHS of the bumper? If so it's come loose and is hanging free!

Somehow the bloody chrome surround survived! there goes my plan to upgrade to the black pack!

Absolutely gutted.

Its funny you should say that, the grill does feel incredibly cheap!

I had a shunt at similar speeds 2-3 years ago. The car in front of me and I were both turning right at a T-junction. She pulled out, I checked left and right and also pulled out but she had stalled 10ft in front of me. I hit her at about 5mph but it made an almighty bang. My car (320d) was completely undamaged but I somehow punched a hole in her bumper. It resulted in an insurance claim of £1200 to fix her Fiesta.

Fortunately subsequent insurance quotes do not seem to have been affected at all, even though I declared the accident as my fault. It seems that "small shunts" go largely ignored so long as you are 40+ and only have one on record. Quotes for my VRS TSI were readily available from £290 upwards, fully comp, declared accident 2 years ago, wife with an SP30, London address.

So, unless you are young do not be too scared about using your insurance to fix things.

Uurrggh, probably a bad time to say I've only just turned 24 :-( thanks for the advice nonetheless!

320d must be tougher than the 335i then my 1 as above needs a new m sport. Mainly due to holes and clips etc being broke.

first time in 19yrs of driving so not to bad but im not claiming. After excess they will just claw it back next year in premium. Still I also pay £290 a yr full comp ...strange how insurance works. Dont live in london tho.

Jeez. How come to compare quite me £389.  20 years accident free motoring, 40 years old, low annual mileage and short London address. Hmmm

Insurance is a postcode lottery but Skoda's (including the fast ones) are generally pretty cheap. My 320d always cost £400-£450 soI was a little surprised when I was quoted sub £300 for a sportier VRS TSI. I guess they are cheaper to repair, attract less unwanted attention and are owned by a less risky driver demagrapic.
