Oil confusion

Featured Replies

Hi all.

This has probably been done to death on here, so please forgive my ignorance in advance.
I've just toped up the oil using this complimentary 1lt bottle that came with the car.

This professional III oil seems mightily expensive stuff to use for regular services, and as the car will have an oil change every 10k (taxi) done by an independent garage using OE parts so I don't invalidate the warranty, this could be a very car to service.

I've found this version of the oil at a fraction of the price, and there doesn't seem to be any different apart from the name, so the questions are, is it ok to use this bog standard Castrol Edge for an oil change, has anyone on here used it, would using this oil invalidate the warranty?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The key numbers you are looking for are "VW 507" If it has that on the label then all is good.

Personally I generally use TPS for 5L Quantum Longlife oil at £27 which meets VW 507 specification.

Cheers Anddenton, I can pickup 8 liters 2x4 of the Castrol Edge for £56 and use what's left over from the service to top up between services, out of interest were do you buy your oil from?

Ok thanks, I'll take a look at that site, cheers.

If your car has a diesel particulate filter, you'll need to use a low ash oil.

It does have the particulate filter, any recommendations on low ash oils, never used or even heard about low ash oils before, would the Castrol Edge I linked up earlier be low ash? Now even more confused.

But if the Quantum is £27 for 5 litres then you will get 10 litres for £54 so it will be cheaper.

Also if its anything like mine Greenline SE you wont need to top up much between service's.

I have done 62,000 miles in mine in 17 months and its had 3 services and I have only used 1.5 litre's for topping up.

Is Quantum a better oil than Castrol Edge? I'm not really bothered about a tenner here or there if I get the better oil, but I don't think the dealers can justify the price they charge for the professional III stuff they sell.

Regularly check levels....NEVER had to top up between scheduled service. $50 for five litres.

The cheapest place I've found suitable oil for 507 (variable servicing) has actually been my local Skoda dealer in York.

I think I paid £28 for 4l. It wasn't Castrol Edge but it was ok.

For convenience I recently bought some Edge from my nearest Halfords as I was already in Scarborough, and even with a trade card it was still £38 or so.

As DCC mentioned you can regularly get Castrol Edge at a discount price from Asda, and eurocarparts often have deals on as well, I can get 4L for £28 delivered at the moment, so think I'm gonna go with the Edge, the cheapest I could find the Enviro+ was £41+vat for 5L and it would involve a 35 mile round trip to pick it up.
