Stage one remap vrs fuel consumption

Featured Replies

Hey everybody just looking into average fuel consumption after a remap my uncle has spoken to a tuning company in waterlooville as he works underneath them and they refuse to remap these cars as they have to many people complain about 15mpg average after remapping. what are everybody's average figures ? Also what sort of prices am I looking at for one. Many thanks people :)

I can't comment on stock as I got mine mapped 2 days after I bought it. Get 38-40 on the motorway cruising around 70

Go to R-Tech in Hinckley mate!

I got mine mapped there and I can get 40+ mpg from mine even though its 370bhp! Remapped cars can be better on fuel because there will be more power and torque available for a given throttle position/RPM,so it's by no means cut and dry!

A custom remap will be around £300+ a few other options like launch control, linear throttle mapping and no lift shift!

I wouldn't be going to them for a remap then......

Most remappers will claim a gain in MPG but realistically it's negligible. You will accelerate that little bit harder having a remap and I have noticed that on the computer it does show up at sub 10 instantaneous mpg a little more since I've had it remapped but overall I noticed no difference and can still get up to 45mpg on a good run driving like a nun.

As said above you shouldn't expect a loss in mpg when remapped. Mine is more economical at stage 2.

It all depends how heavy your right foot is,

Steady motorway run i can see 38 - 40 to gallon,

other extreme i did a trackday last year and used a tank of v power in 125 miles

Thought that sounded a bit off thank you people will have a look at other options anyone know of any good re mappers in or around hampshire way ?

Mines slighty better after remap if ran on shell v-power

Speak to Clive at CNTuning.

Strange.

Funnily enough, when I first got my standard '51 plate VRS, I posted on here about rather rubbish fuel consumption. It was...just about acceptable at best, but with a heavy right foot - a bit juicy!

After a few months, I had a stage-1 remap done at JKM in Portsmouth (a well-known and respected VAG tuner).

They were doing a 'sale' at the time on REVO remaps - so I got it for £199. I also fitted at the same time a Pipercross air filter, and a lovely Forge re-circ dump valve, 'for da blingz, innit!' :D

Anyway. Post remap (always using Shell V-Power) the car was literally transformed. Gone was a little hesitation at just-off-idle acceleration, and best of all (as well as the obvious power increase) the car now revs hard right into the red, whereas before it ran out of puff at anything north of 5,000 rpm.

50,000 miles later, at 130k on the clock (and driven like it was designed to be driven) the car is literally a total weapon. I guess the engine is now beautifully bedded in and nice and loose - it really does go like a scalded cat now. In the dry, 1st gear is useless at WOT, and 2nd isn't much better...she just spins up like a mentalist...and in the wet, forget putting your foot down until 3rd at least. Then it easily powers on to over 150 on the clock (on track days, naturally...)

And despite all this - the fuel economy got way, way better. Even driving with a club foot, I get as near as dammit 300 miles to a tank full. And driving in granny mode sees 400 easily.

So - a remap seems to be a very good idea! Give JKM a call...

Between 300-320 per tank on stage 1 (whats that per gallon??)

Between 300-320 per tank on stage 1 (whats that per gallon??)

11 gallon roughly around 30 mpg average give or take

11 gallon roughly around 30 mpg average give or take

Thats ok for running around  , i had a motorway run yesterday and got 180 off 1/2 tank, so pretty much the same as everyones getting i guess.

mpg shouldn't be too much different, maybe a bit better. However liberal use of right foot becomes more tempting, which might reduce your figure somewhat :)

The tuning company is correct, you will see reduced mpg figures after a remap on any turbocharged petrol engine..... if you utilise the extra available power.

The reasons why this is, has been known to engineers from as far back as the end of the nineteenth century.

Turbocharged petrol engines require an air/fuel ratio that stays within about 7% of mean boost torque (MBT) air/fuel ratio of 12.4:1 (0.85 lambda).

Therefore if a tuning company only increasing boost pressure with too little or no increase in fuel then that would cause detonation and destroy the engine.

Turbocharged diesels are a different matter, compression ignition engines do not need to sustain a continuous flame front and can operate cleaner and cooler with large air surpluses.

Bill.

PS my car runs a little over 1.5 bar peak boost and I get much better than 15mpg.

The increased MPG they claim is due to increased torque and bhp in the same rev ranges- you can drive at lower RPM's creating the same power as the original map thus an MPG saving although in petrol it's always pretty negligible compared to the big gains you normally see in diesels

How are you guys driving?

I get 360-390 to a tank....with a 1.9T stage 3 car pushing 371bhp and I drive it like it was built to be driven!
