tape drive problem

Featured Replies

i have a tape drive problem :(

it keeps turning its self off mid backup :S its an ibm lto3 external it seemingly for no reason at all but it just turns off

any ideas

Does it actually lose power, ie do all the LED's go out?

It's either overheating or got a dodgy power supply........

Either way, you need the man with a screwdriver, methinks.

Have you tried a different tape? It could be that there's something wrong which is causing an unrecoverable error???

Otherwise, maybe there's something that it's trying to back up that throws up an error. For instance, our server here throws a hissy fit if we have to back up during the day, as people have their *.pst files open which means that the backup software can't access the files to copy them onto the tape. If that's the case, see if closing EVERYTHING down in Task Manager except Windows and the backup software does the trick...

erm the lights just go out so you have to press the power switch to turn it off then turn it back on again then it works fine for a a few days i cant see any real pattern or anything

in arcserve i get this

6300 Windows NT SCSI PORT Error

Module:

Tape Engine

Reason:

Problem with sending a SCSI command to SCSI device.

but im not suprised as well its not in effect turned on lol

Not too good with fiddling with system settings myself. There are a couple of freeware 'de-bugging' programs out there that sometimes work. Maybe one of those is worth a try?

shall have a search :)

The arcserve error is caused by the power failure. I'd get the PSU changed in the external casing. Hopefully you have some kind of warranty of maintenance agreement in place.

The drive's vanishing off the SCSI bus, hence the error.

Get the PSU and fan checked out. There's nothing you can do with software when the hardware's donald ducked!

its only 3 weeks old grrr right time to get the serial number and call ibm then lol

We had a brand new SDLT drive delivered to us straight from HP and it was DOA, never worked properly and Arcserve was generating tons of bus errors. After a replacement drive was sent all was well. I would say if its going to bust it will be shortly after installation.

We have that same problem very occasionally with a hp dds4 thing... highly random!
