Trackers. Thoughts/opinions?

Featured Replies

Just wondered if anyone has had a tracker installed and general experiences.

Cost, accuracy, phone apps, insurance savings....in interested to know.

Have the Co-Op young driver insurance for the eldest on her Seat Arosa. The tracker was installed at a time convenient to us and was completed in next to no time.

I have to say the scoring is very fair and at the first quarter review i've already seen a reduction in the premium. It offers the added benefit of a tracker should the vehicle be stolen. Despite its big brother sort of reputation its been a much cheaper option than doing without, quite surprised in all fairness and recommended. The lad is coming up to seventeen and thinks he's going without...

What sort of Tracker?

The ones installed by the Insurance company to keep track of your driving style OR a TRACKER used to help police find your car after it's stolen?

If it's the latter I looked at getting one for my Fabia. It made no difference to my insurance premium so it would only be useful if I wanted to get my car back after it's been nicked.

To get a discount on insurance I think the car would need to have a high risk of getting stolen or be expensive. Ie Impreza Turbo, BMW, Mercedes

I should have made it more clear, sorry. I was referring to trackers which assist in locating stollen cars as opposed to the insurance type trackers which monitor driving styles. That being said for younger drivers I don't think the black box type are a bad thing as long as the premium reduction is worth it. When I was 17, first years insurance was 2600. I'd have driven like a saint with a black box if it had reduced It to sub 1000.

Tracker for a Skoda?

The insurance trackers do both.

What you could do is put some insurance quotes through on GoCompare with and without a tracker to see if it makes any difference to your premium.

If I were to get one I be looking at one that can be triggered to stop the car automatically when its safe to do so and make sure that the beacon still works when in a container.

Though these cost anywhere between £200 upwards. But the thing that puts me off most of all is the yearly subscription fee.

You can get cheap self fit ones on Amazon. But I am not sure how good they are.

It may reduce your premium, but it will likely not make it any more recoverable as thieves know to plug in £15 GPS/GPRS jammers and the cars just vanish.

I work in the tracker industry and beyond big brother applications, they're not much use now.

Fair enough

Good thing is they tend to be attached to cars that a first time driver would buy. Not necessarily obvious that they'd have one :D

First thing I would question is would you want your car back after it's been stolen? Most people on here wouldn't want it back.

I have spoken to a few car owners recently who had trackers turned off in their cars. The general concensus was that it saved very little on your insurance anyway?

The only benefit might be if you installed it on a car which a thief wouldn't expect one to be fitted to. But then they probably wouldn't be looking to nick it in the first place. Blackvue do some trackers which are small and can be hidden but need charging every so often.

I wouldn't, hopefully the thief would die in a big ball of fire, slowly.

Including the TRACKER system which uses GPS, GMS and VHF?

We are talking about Skodas here.

What about the MESH system?

They claim high recovery rates.  Is that falsified?

I have use of tracker from the find (chase) and recover side. Used Tracker, RAC trackstar and several others. Its worth noting police vehicles are mainly fitted to locate "tracker" equipt vehicles.

However I've rang many other companies and managed to relay info in live time with successful outcomes.

Its true to say there are £15 ebay jammers that can jam the signal of trackers, although its not that common at present. Likewise most crims are savvy to fitting locations and we often come across dumped interior parts at last know locations.

From all the activations I've known about I'd say there's been an 80-85% success rate.

What about an old smart phone hard wired into car and hidden on pay as you go sim with tracker app which you can access via your smartphone? Might be a cheaper alternative.

My ten pence worth.

Well, in fairness it might be because I'm hidden far away from the customers and only get the hard stuff to work on that I see a lot of jammed/removed units, but I've certainly seen a lot of expensive metal vanish in a puff of smoke.

On the flip side, I can get one fitted for free, so there's no issue with me putting one in a new car.

Had my peugoet stolen, so got a tracker on my Yeti.

I still remember 20 years back when the only and most effective anti theft device a Skoda could have..........was the badge on the back of it that said,SKODA

Nowhere near I'm afraid.

Highest number was about 700,000 in 1990.

Last year total number stolen was down to approx. 69,500.

This is the lowest figure for nearly 50 years.
