Do you need to prepare the car surface in any way before you apply them? Was planning on cleaning, polishing and waxing at some point, but that will be before I apply the strips.

If memory serves me correctly they give you a small cleaning cloth with something like alcohol on it to clean the area first. That will probably remove wax etc prior to fitting. 

They supplied cleaning cloths and suggested the panels need to be warmed before putting the strips on so the glue sticks well. I used the better half's hair dryer.

Nice sunny day when I did mine so the panels were well warmed up.
