2.9 Granada Scorpio went along at a fair lick.

Had the 4x4 version of this - awesome car

Did look at the 3l Senator as a replacement, but was a utter slug-barge in comparision

Citroen XM, you could get some fast ones and they're a brilliant armchair ride.

Yep loved the 3.0 XM V6 my Dad had for a while. Brilliant bit of kit.

Still remember the reg, G440 XDP :-)

This too for sure, giant killer in its time.

Oh yes.  I'd have one of these tomorrow.  They go on for ever.  From back when Toyota built things properly.

Always fancied a Granada Scorpio 4x4 2.9.  They were decent as standard but even better when fitted with a twin turbo or supercharger conversion, as quite a few people did back in the day.  Made it the ultimate Q-car, a Cosworth-eating, unassuming monster.

There was one for a grand on eBay about a year ago.  Why is it the cars you want come up when you've no money?

There is a guy around who specialises in German 80s luxobarges who I found. His stock and prices are very reasonable: 1988 500SEC with 140k (just run in) and full dealer history for £4.5k. I have no cash either at mo but hanging out for a 560SEC, Nice E320 or 190E 2.5 16. Would love an LS400 too. There are some lovely looking ones for less than £2k on autotrader.

LS400 has to be the quietest thing I've ever driven! At tick-over you had a job telling if the engine was running or not, without looking at the rev counter! Smooth V8 coupled with massive attention to build quality.

These were the cars I loved as a little 'un.

the 3.0 Vx Senator was a fav and the Rover SD1

Wasn't me that mentioned it, but how about the Rover 620TI? 0-60 in 7 seconds or thereabouts.

My Dad had a long line of Rovers, never had the 620ti but did have an 820 Vitesse Sport, which had the same T-series turbocharged engine running c200bhp, Recaro interior, 18" alloys huge boot etc

He also went on to have a Rover 800 Coupe:

lol, i pass one of these every day too and from work!............. and it still drives! lol

In the current floods an old Citroen Xantia would be great - just pump the suspension height up.

I had one 18 years ago, very comfortable car to cruise in, I seem to remember that the brakes were either on or off.

At the same time one of my colleagues had an XM which was fine until the hydro suspension started to play up, it would suddenly drop on the one side whilst sat at the lights.

I was lucky enough to drive rental versions of these.

Saab 9000 Carlsson, a 2.3 turbo beast that was well equipped, built like a tank and quick for its day.

I've got those in my Ford, the drivers one got a puncture so I replaced it with a fork lift truck inner tube.

Shame they put that engine in a manual 4x4 :(:

The Granada Cosworth was an automatic, I know because I converted one to manual to work in a Sierra 4x4 :)

The XM was an utterly awful car; CX technology built down to a price

This is what you want; they don't get more sofa-y

A friend had a CX with the 2.5 litre turbo engine. Lovely comfy ride and very brisk when needed until all the hydraulics failed.

They all did that on occasion, though early DS' (pre-LHM) and XMs were worse.

I do recall riding my motorbike to work one day cursing what I thought was a lorry that was spilling diesel on the *exact same route that I took to work every day*.

Of course when I got home I found the CX sat looking guilty on the drive having disgraced itself once again.
