odd one... biggest intercoolers people are running?

Featured Replies

Hi all. Just picked up an evo intercooler for 20 quid. Bargain :)

But only now have I realised how bloody big it is . Hudge!

Wondering whats the biggest intercoolers people are running and what kinda space have they got (pics without bumper would be great)

Was wondering if anyone runs their cooler with pipework going from one side of intercooler to the other and then back around engine bay somehow (not back into same side )

Kinda hard to explain . But if you have done it you will know wjat I mean lol

thanks for your time

  • Realise this. The more pipework. The more air needed to fill and more lag. Just trying to work out if I can fit this cooler into the space and how to best run pipes before I go spending any money

  • My old man fabed a bracket up for me, you can see the two large torx screws it uses and it also fixes to the bumper support aswell.

  • You probably wouldn't notice the lag as said. The other way to do it is to run a single pass cooler and passat inlet manifold to reduce the pipework.

You want to keep your pipe work to a minimum mate.

Very nice. On the NS of the car where roughly does that pipe run ?

I noticed a nice possible hole where the horn is located. Where I could run from turbo. Behind rad. Through hole to intercooler

mines a similar setup to Joes but using ally welded pipes and a smaller cooler.. 57mm pipework all through

Mine is a mishimoto cooler, its abit over kill and wish I used I smaller but wider one like matts now.

do you get any lag with this cooler? And what kind of intake temps do you have ? Thanks

Dont notice any lag the turbo isnt really big enough to produce noticeable lag. Never taken any readings on intake temps.

I meant from the turbo filling up the cooler. But thats a good enough answer for me :)

matt any pictures with bumper on? also where did you get cooler and whats the sizes?

A large cooler and long pipework store pressurised air effectively, it doesn't really create lag, this is a myth. It's better to cool the air effectively than minimise pipework lengths and intercooler size, a high volume can act as a pressure damper but far more important is the pressure drop created by the pipework and intercooler since this is the most restrictive part of the system, poorly designed cheap intercoolers will actually rob you of power due to this pressure drop.

My figuring behind using an evo intercooler. Besides it being a bargain. A standart evo has 270ish (?? ) bhp so ive figured this will do for me as a cheap alternative

Post a picture of it fletch

Here is a good explanation of the different function of diesel and petrol intercoolers:

Tiz.H mounted a Skyline intercooler in his car. Piccie has gone now though.

Ive come to the conclusion... its too big! If the ports were at a 90 degree angle instead of 45 I could have made it fit :(
