Greenline MPG challenge! Can you beat the record...

@ Jules

Your 800 miles works out at 61.5, your 700 works out less @ 54 assuming a full 13 gallon refill, I read you as 700 is the norm and 800 now and again?

You then state your front tyres are on 72000 miles, that in itself says only one thing, you do straight motorways most of the time which would also back up your fuel figures, which I may add are the same as what I've been saying to expect from this car,

Now,

Let me explain something to you, if you came to a forum looking for genuine advice and found Walter Mitty and his family telling you that their Bugatti does 80mpg and you spent out on one to find it does 8mpg in reality how would you feel?

I can't have liars or BS'r's and when these fuel threads go up around the forums there is always one that has to outdo all the others, I work in an industry that attracts them like dust to electricity so I'm well experienced in spot the BS,

Now so you don't think I'm having a go at you, none of the above is aimed at you because you've posted in reality just what I said, Greenline 1.6TDi real world consumption = 55-65mpg

And regarding the mph, it's 55mph that is the premium economy so don't worry about explaining that to me as I'm already up on that, the actual reality is it doesn't make a whole lot of difference and certainly not worth putting yourself though a slug drive to get 2mpg more, it's when you go above 80mph that the drinking starts.

  • Kevberlin, well yes maybe some of us are a bit sad      l drive 40k a year and its my own hard earned that pays for it, so the difference between 49mpg like I had in my previous Mondeo and 66mpg I get

  • Smiles per gallon not miles per gallon??

  • "Good runs behind a national express bus" Wow!! When you take the free wifi into account then this is better than the person last year or the year before that said their best mpg was while tailgatin

Have owned superb greenline since last October , real world driving here on Isle of Wight I get 53mg doing 13mile journey x 2 per day on B roads , before I had Fabia scout 1.4tdi for four and half years and that was always returning 56.5mpg ,

If I'm honest I was hoping the greenline would be at least the same if not slightly better , maybe winter running has hampered figures and I have recently let tyre pressures down to 2.2 bar all round as I find ride to hard if tyres are set to manufactures recommended settings .

@ Superbia

OK, thanks.

But as I say, when refilling and brimming, I don't need to put more than 54 litres in.  In fact, I don't think I've ever put more than 55 litres in to brim it.  So the calculations have to be done at 11 gallons not 13 gallons.  Which gives (using 54 litres):

Summer easy = 800 miles = 67.35 mpg

Summer normal = 750 miles = 63.14 mpg

Winter = 700 miles = 58.93 mpg

Staying for the moment in the context of 'Maximum mpg - what's your record', the 800 miles/67mpg achievements between refills (albeit under the more idealised conditions of summer months) represent an average of journeys.  So some journeys are higher than 67 mpg, some are lower.

I get much better mpg for the return leg of my commute. While the car sits parked for nine hours before heading home again in the evening, generally speaking, the air temps, etc are higher so I can easily exceed 67 mpg, over the 65 miles, in such idealised (summer months) but real world conditions nonetheless.  These are my figures, not government figures.  Always calculated off a brimmed refill and the odometer.

And it's for the above reasons that I'm happy to post 80+ mpg photos of my (over-reading) Maxidot display for a 60+ mile journey home (in summer months) in a thread titled "Greenline MPG challenge! Can you beat the record..."

It's a bit of fun.

@ Jules,

Even allowing for that your figures are still realistic rather than sensational and you are probably a one in ten motorist that actually will/can sit at a constant 60mph,

As far as Maxidots go I could get my older VX's to read 999 mpg on reset and keep it well up into the 100+ mpg reading if I ran @ 50mph on an empty straight road with no obstuctions, I take your point about the thread title but these always migrate into Neverland tales tbh,

Like I said previously, your tyre wear indicates a pattern that only a certain set of circumstances could match and certainly not the usual commute, if you look at Velos fuely that Coops kindly linked you'll see two times where he hasn't got 30mpg, I suspect that is due to being in central London or similar  during those times.

Christ either my keyboard is playing up or I'm becoming Stanley Unwin after proof reading it with splelnig mitskaes :-)

I seem to be able to get 800 miles out of a tankful on my Greenline without really trying. Last summer I got 842 miles out of it on one tankful, but I didn't re-brim the tank so don't know how much was left at the bottom, but it cannot have been much.   What I like about the car is the effortless way it is possible to get great economy if driven gently.

mines a 1.6 tdi 2015 superb but not a greenline

ive always been good at getting the last 1mpg extra (merc sprinter 34mpg, 7.5tonner 24mpg in the fuel strikes)

mondeo mk3 130ps 49mpg true average

Just landed in Germany. Three people fully loaded (my wife brought her full collection of clothes for spring, summer, autumn & winter in view of fact we are here for 5 days!).

Brim to brim measure means 67.5 mpg.

Greenline is an ace car.
