How hard is it to DIY a timing chain? (Fabia 1.4 8v nearly same as Felicia 1.3)

Featured Replies

I've posted this in the Fabia section as well but i was hoping to ask for some knowledge from any Felicia owners as this engine is a sister to the Felicias 1.3.

Ive had a look through a couple of threads about timing chains and DIY etc etc, and i want to know how hard it would be to do it myself or with a little help?

I reckon id be looking about £300 for a garage to do the work, thats money i really dont have to hand.

So if i were to go it alone or if i were to ask for a little help from a friend or fellow briskodian with a little more knowledge... Is it possible? Any knowledge or ideas that i need to know, any tools i will need or anything? I simply just need to get it fixed as cheap as possible!

Thanks!  :)

It's not difficult if you're handy with the spanners. Get a workshop manual and acquaint yourself with how to do the job. Get the bits together which comprise the chain kit, front cover gasket and seal and the sump gasket. Last time I did one it cost me around thirty quid for the bits. That was a couple of years ago on the wife's Felicia with genuine parts off the Bay. I'd recommend an oil and filter change at the same time because you need to drop the sump. If your car has power steering you'll have some more bits to remove to access the timing cover. The drive belt will have to come off anyway so it might be wise to fit a new one if the old one looks anything other than mint. There's a metal water pipe runs around the bottom of the engine which you may have to remove to get the sump off so check it out first as you may need to drain the cooling system. Once the timing cover is off time the engine as per the manual before dismantling further. Don't forget to thoroughly clean all gasket mating surfaces before reassembly. I always use Wellseal gasket compound during reassembly. After twenty years in the trade I never found anything better.

If I can find my old workshop manual I should be able to scan the relevant pages for you. Hope that's some help to you.

Thanks for the post thats a great help to me :)

I have a Haynes manual myself so i will have a look through that and see how much of a job it will be, i know the engines are slightly different in layout in the Fabia compared to the Felicia but i will do some more homework and see how easy it is! :)

You're welcome Jack. I shall follow the thread. If you need any help just shout.

Si.
