Compbrake top mounts

Featured Replies

Not had a go with those, the picture looks like it is probably just a stock library picture, felicia top mounts only have 2 holes, old djaychela might have tried those on his rally car. Might be worth a pm, and that other geezer fruitbat on here might have used them, he's a rallyist.

I've emailed compbrake for an actual pic and a dimension or two...

Hope someone can help, i'll order a set if they are suitable for me. My plan A certainly didn't work :(

I can't view the topic, i'm not a member. Any chance you can copy and paste the highlights?

Not sure kens are compbrake, but chances are they will be similar

I would worry about running Ken's set up on my rally car, because his top mounts are sat on top of the wing rather than underneath it and appear only to be held on with rivnuts - a sharp jolt could strip the threads of the rivnuts and poke the strut through the bonnet.  Probably fine on a track day car, but certainly not for stage rallying.

Having tried them, I'm not a fan of solid bushed top mounts on anything other than a racing car or for tarmac rallying.  They transmit so much more noise and vibration into the shell and put extra strain on the rest of the suspension.  I ran them on my stage rally felicia on one event, and broke a balljoint (Which in turn then pulled an outer CV joint in half) - we had to retire.  I've never broken one running with the rubber mounts on my H&P shocks, and yet driven over worse roads than the stage on which we had the incident!

cheers

No info back from compbrake, i'll give them a ring when i have a chance

But reading around there are lots of references to sleeve nuts with these types of top mounts.

Am i correct in thinking the sleeve nut goes through the bearing on it's inner dia and nut top face secures the bearing to the strut?

Found these pics when searching which shows a compbrake top mount on a gaz coilover, so that answers my question on how the sleeved nut works

I just need to find out the bearing depth to see if i can fit them on my strut

Why do you want to use top mounts like that anyway?

To get something that will fit on here!

My focus/felicia hybrid top mount didn't work :(

You could get a machine shop to open up the bore of that black top hat piece so that it slides over the piston rod, then just use a thick washer with a hole big enough that only the thread sticks through on top of it, again possibly a machine shop could make this washer/ spacer, That way more thread will poke through.

I bet those compbrake things are not cheap.

I might not have posted for a while, but I'm always watching!

I'm pretty sure I've still got my solid top mounts in my lockup.  I'll try to see this weekend, and I can measure them up for you.

Have you had a chance to measure these yet?

I could be interested in purchasing them if you have no use for them... :)

Thanks

Morning!

Just picked them up.  The bearings are 25mm deep, with a bore of just under 20mm.  I've also got a pair of top-hat spacers with them that can be used to sleeve the bore down to just under 14mm.

They've got a TAS part number on them (TAS2347).  I think TAS was the name of one of CompBrake's previous incarnations.

I'm happy to sell them if they're any use to you.

cheers

Thankyou james.

Pm'd you :)

  • 2 months later...

Those are much cheaper than I thought, although be aware that the ford dampers have a bigger piston rod than the skoda ones, the thread is a bigger size too
