Heater problems! - poor temp control and fan changes speed

Featured Replies

I've owned my 2011 model VRS CR from New. In Sep 2013, I noticed that the vents were blowing cold air despite the A/C being off and the temp controls being set to 20 Degrees. Outside temp was below 10 degrees C. I don't use auto mode and normally have the fan speed set to no.3.

It's been into the dealer and magically there was a software update to the temp controller to solve poor regulation. This didn't fix it. They then said they needed the car overnight to test when the engine is cold ? I've not been able to book it back in due to being too busy with work etc.

I've since noticed as well as poor temp regulation the fan speed changes from 3 to 2 and from 3 to 4 without me touching the buttons when in manual!

The car didn't do this from new and something has changed!

Any clues?

Cheers,

Ian

My guess is that one of the HVAC flap motors is stuck or sticking - has happened to me a couple fo times...   have you tried resetting it all (on a 2007 it's ignitiion on, engine off press and hold Econ and the bottom right (or maybe left) button on the cluster of 4 betwen the temperture displays).  Admittedly thi smay not e the same for a 2011 but maybe worth a try.

Hi Skomaz, no Eco button! Why would this cause the fan to change speeds?

Hi Skomaz, no Eco button! Why would this cause the fan to change speeds?

THe system seems to use both varying temperature and varying fan speed to maintain the setting - so if it is calling for more heat the flap would move and the fan increase as well.

If you have no econ button I'm not sure how the reset function works (if at all in that case) so you might need a look with VCDS (although I'd expect the dealer would have done that already?)

Heating/ ventilation issues on my 2010 vRS were dealt with by replacing some sensors - all done under warranty.

Sarge.

Dealer had the car for two days and it's still not fixed! Car stinks of WD40! They claim the fan speeds up and down automatically even when in manual to assist with heating or cooling! I smell BS! I've tried this. On a cold morning with the engine warm if I leave the temp at 20 Degrees and the fan at speed one it's stays on one regardless of how warm the cabin is! If I ask for 26 Degrees the fan does speed up. Does this happen on any one elses?

They are correct, the fan speeds do vary according to demand. What happens if you stick it in Auto, and turn the temperature control all the way up to "HI" on both sides. On this setting you should full fan speed and maximum heat out the vents.

Running in manual mode is the most likely cause of a sticking flap vent as they never move, so seize in position. A basic settings run with VCDS will cause all the motors to operate across their whole range and recalibrate. The basic settings will show any duff motors that need to be replaced.

Hi Mannyo, Thanks for the prompt reply. Both on Hi in auto =full speed and heat as you suggest. They claim they've fully tested all the flap vents. I'll see if I can get a friend to test with VCDS.

How does VCDS indicate a faulty motor? Is it obvious or an obscure fault code?

Cheers,

Ian

When the basic setting run, if a motor is unable to move or move properly then a fault code will be logged in the HVAC module identifying which motor.

However, because you get heat on the HI setting its most likely cause could be a duff sensor which is telling the car the interior is hotter than it really is, so you get cool air. On the HI setting all sensors are ignored, so it just pumps out the hottest air it can.
