How much difference would a 205/45/17 put my speedo out?

Featured Replies

Hi all

Unfortunately hit a huge pothole tonight and split my front nearside tyre on the vRS (205/40/17), so annoyed. On looking around my local area nobody seems to have anything in stock with the correct load and speed rating but plenty of 205/45/17, would this make a big difference to speedo accuracy? Is it going to make the car read higher or lower eg will it now say I'm doing 40 when I'm actually doing 35?

Many thanks for any help

Your speedo wont be 100% accurate anyway. So itll just make it a little more inaccurate and read a mph or so slower.

A 45 profile tyre is 3.36% bigger and the recommended difference is no greater than +/-- 2.5%.....so,no,I would not fit them.

Speedo accuracy is one thing but the taller tyre may give clearance problems.

Are they really that close to begin with?

I guess you wouldnt know what theyre like at full suspension compression anyway. So its hard to say?

Thanks all, I'll check the links out shortly

Re clearance, no modifications on my car and you could fit your hand in sideways between the tyre and wheelarch so I doubt that would be a problem, I'll check it out though.

Thank you

It might put your speedo out almost by nothing.

So put the 205/45/R 17 side by side with your 205/40 R 17, if physically the Total Diameter is much more, do not use them.

*****Do they not have 215/40 R 17 XL 87 W or better in stock ???*****

I have 215/40 R 17 on that are no bigger than Pirelli 205 /40 R 17,

and have measured 205/45/17 against the pirreli that were not physically bigger.

So if you want a higher sidewall you better go into a tyre fitter and measure the tyres side by side.

The Numbers on the side are not always accurate by size.

a 205/45 R 17 is not going to provide that much more protection anyway.

(I will not bother posting my tyre comparison pictures, unless you want them again.)

One thing I thought of, would I need to change all 4 to the same size or would just the front 2 be ok?

I have a pair of 215/40 R 17 on the front and 205/40 R17 on the rear, but as i said they are physically the same size.

The Fronts are Goodride SV308 and cost all of £50 each, and have been good.

The Owners manual tells you different size fron and rear will or may effect your ESP, ABS, XDS.

You should really change all four, the large difference in rotational speed will confuse the traction control as it may think some of your wheels are losing traction. Best case, nothing will happen, worst case you'll throw a number of fault codes and ABS/ESP light. If you must do this then buy two, otherwise buy the correct size online, try a different retailer. Someone will have what you need.

Isle of Wight!

But surely they can have tyres delivered by Monday.   Storms allowing!!

Only throws out where the rotational speed is different,  which is why you compare sizes,  not just the scores on the doors.

The Pirelli Zero Nero 205/40 R 17 as being fitted by Skoda instead of Dunlop Sport Maxx & Continents are physically bigger/taller total diameter and rolling circumference than

some other brands on 215/40 R 17,

But they are fitting all 4.

so anyone buying just a pair of Pirelli to mix with another Brand of used tyres need to consider that.

It's not that much of an unusual size, I'd hold out until you find somewhere or order online (blackcircles etc) for local fitment -it's specced 40 section for a reason.

Just spoken to eTyres, he's getting back to me shortly about Maxxis or Kumho as I've read good things about them on here. If push comes to shove I can always swap my Monte wheels over until the new ones come in, both my cars have the same Dunlops on so there's always that option :-)

The Dunlop Sport Maxx are about the smallest of all 205/40 R 17 with the correct speed and load rating, and really need measured against other tyres,

where my 215 & 205 Pirelli on are the same size,

Maybe best to put at least a pair of wheels/tyres from the Monte onto the vRS.

Has it all been OK with the vRS, you have been avoiding us,  for your sanity???

Or just use the Monte :)

Have Camskill got any Uniroyal Rainsport 3s in stock?

How can someone give driving instruction in an Automatic while teaching them in a Manual ??

Hi George

No not been avoiding at all, just been super busy for a few months setting up a new driving school, website, Ltd company etc, many, many very late nights/early mornings working, exhausted!!

Hopefully getting somewhere near close to organised now though so I should be back here a bit more regular now :-)

vRS not using much oil these days, 1.5 litres in about 5k so a great improvement!

Off to next lesson, catch up soon and thank you all for your help, eTyres coming to fit 2 Kumho's to the vRS this afternoon for £140 and also swapping the remaining good tyre to my Monte that has one needing change soon, hopefully a result.

They say things come in 3's, my printer packed up this morning while trying to print the claim form for the tyre and also fence panels down after the strong winds last night, hopefully that's my 3 for now!!!!

i RAN 205/45/17 on my old vrs as winters, they made the speedo ACCURATE to GPS , so no overread as normal... no clearance issues.

That's fine, but I would still ask myself why Skoda opted to fit 40 profile tyres instead of 45 profile.

It may be that it was just the dictates of fashion, hot hatch means go for the lowest tyre you can,or perhaps extensive testing was done and they concluded that a 40 series tyre offered the best allround performance.

I guess we will never know!!

Because they fitted to 215 40 r17 to the 3 cars that they gave what looked like better figures even when heavier. Sk budget buy

those winters were supplied to me by my local skoda dealer, who approved them. I just went along with it. my current winters are 205/45/16's , and my new summers are 215/40/17's.
