2 x Faults - Advice needed (Oil contamination in EGR / Intake Flap Motor, and ABS)

Hi Folks,

 

Was away on holiday in Devon and had both an orange Exhaust warning light come on on my 2006 Octavia (and remained on) 2 days after driving through 100 yard 6-8inch deep trench of flood water. Before that, i was getting ABS warning lights come on intermittently over the past few weeks, which would go off after restarting the engine at the next junction. While the ABS I can understand due to the sensor and the bearing, the first diagnosis I don't understand, especially as the technical at the Skoda garage said the intake motor doesn't take oil (didn't mean much to me). He reckoned having a second opinion, as he could only do an diagnostic test as well as a preliminary visual check in the hour allocated

 

Anyway, I called up my local Skoda garage to book it in and they quoted me £900 for the below work (350 on the ABS and the rest on the Intake flap motor / EGR valve), based on the email I gave them from the Exeter dealership i went into. They can't use the info below and recommend doing their own check so they can independently varify the test. My local garage said it could also be the Turbo, which would be at least another £800-£1k. They suggested ordering the parts, but doing a further assessment to identify the problem with the exhaust light error so as not to do the £900 worth of work and find that it only fixes 50% of the problem.

 

Any advice and enlightening words would be very much appreciated as i'm a complete car novice. The car's only worth £3500 and I was going to sell it in the summer.

I have had the flap motor oil contamination on mine, but it was still under warranty at the time so it was replaced foc, looks like a handy job to replace it though (£550 sounds a bit steep)

 

As for the ABS i would just try cleaning off the ring and see if that cures it, is the wheel making noise? why does the dealer want to change the bearing?

Because the relucter ring that the senser uses to detect the speed is built into the hub/bearing. This often rusts and is the cause of problems.

Yup it's fixed in place so you have to change the whole hub. The VAG part is about £120 and not that difficult a job so £350 seems pretty steep. If the sensor was damaged as well (if the ring expends with rust it can rub on the sensor) that's about £60 but doesn't always need done.

 

You might want to consider getting the stone guard done at the same time. It's about £20. The guard is aluminum and it oxidises at the mounting points and comes loose eventually. It's another hub off job to replace but about 2min work if the hub is off anyway (just 3 bolts).

This happened on my car about 4 weeks ago. The garage replaced the ABS sensor but the ABS was kicking in when i was lightly braking. They said it was the ABS sensor ring which is in the hub so they ordered a new hub and the cost for whole job was £280 but i'd already paid £80 for the ABS sensor the previous week :(
