ESP curious problem advice for newby pls

Featured Replies

Hi. I have a 2006 Octavia 4x4 estate. It has only done 50k and I have had it since 14k. Over the years I have owned it it has been completely fault free. I have self serviced it more than required in accordance with the service book.

The other day, for no apparent reason the ESP light was on and I thought I must have accidentally hit the button. However I could not put it out with the button. If I restarted the car it was off and all was normal again.

The next day the ESP light was on again but went out again if i restarted the car.

I had it diagnosed today and was told that the Haldex control unit was faulty and the cost is terrifying.

My question is 2 fold. 1.How faulty can it really be if all that is required to make it work perfectly again is to restart the car? 2 would servicing the Haldex unit improve things as it has not been previously done as the service book does not even mention it.

This is really annoying as I was just about to Mot and sell it but now it won,t even MOT!

I do not have the fault codes.

Thanks

Worst case scenario you can get a complete rear diff/haldex for £150, it is an easy replacement job and can be done in a few hours.

First of all, check all the electrical connectors, there is one across the back of the diff that can corrode a little and also the wires that connect to the Haldex, clean the contacts and try again.

The unit is very reliable and usually trouble free, I replaced mine on the 4motion Golf as the previous owner had the car on brake test rollers and damaged the original unit.

You can see what I did in this thread from post #18

Sold it today for peanuts. Always hated the thing anyway! Thanks for the replies.
