DPF Removed but ECU not changed...?

Featured Replies

That link says it is illegal to use a vehicle with a dpf removed. It is not illegal to remove the dpf. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to remove the dpf on a track car.

Given the MOT changes, and likely legal issues for companies offering removal, I can see that changing soon

Can't see that happening, it will just end up with the service being offered for off road use only.  I suspect it would be too convoluted to ban removal without also risking making it illegal to remove it for legitimate reasons - i.e. repair.

100W bulbs are illegal for road use but plenty of people sell them.

There is no definitive 'yes' or 'no' as to whether removing the DPF is illegal or not as it is open to interpretation.

It's been done to death here...

Removing the DPF isn't illegal.

Driving a car with its DPF removed on the road isn't illegal.

However driving a car on the road that does not meet the 'air pollutant emissions standards' is illegal.

It is likely that removing the DPF will prevent the car from meeting those emissions standards, however it may be possible that it might continue to meet the standards. Who knows for sure? Certainly not an MOT tester.

As diesels don't have their emissions tested as part of the MOT it would also be difficult to prove.

It is also quite difficult for an MOT tester to visually inspect the DPF. Not impossible but also not very easy.

On a MkII Octavia vRS it is possible to see the bottom of the DPF from underneath the car (when on ramps) - but only just. It isn't possible to see it through the engine bay.

A quick cursory glance will show that a 'gutted' DPF is still in situ. A straight through pipe will stick out like a sore thumb, espcially a nice shiny stainless one!

As has already been stated several times, there is no emissions test for a diesel, only a soot test.

My DPF equipped vRS registered '0' in the soot test. A car without a DPF will register a level of soot content but it is highly unlikely to be enough to fail the soot test as this test is designed to allow non-DPF diesels to pass!

The MOT tester can add any suspicion he might have as an advisory or fail the car if he can prove it has been removed, which he won't be able to do unless the DPF has been removed in it's entirety and replaced with a straight-through pipe.

A soot reading does not prove the DPF has been removed.

A weld on the DPF itself does not prove the DPF's internals have been removed.

vRS's with their DPF's gutted will continue to pass their MOT's.

Right, I live in Lincoln and I'm having a place called Mr.Tyre remove my DPF and replace it for a straight through. I then wanted to go to a place called Corten Miller and have a stage 1 re map done by them ( which is done through Revvo ).

I'm not lucky enough ( or haven't found a place ) that'll do a physical DPF delete and remap all in one.

As for the MOT I'm lucky enough to have a guy who said as long as they car passes on all safety aspects and the smoke test...he's not overly concerned weather he can visually see a DPF or not as long as I can top his fridge up with a few cans to which I thought was fair enough.

I don't care about the legality of it. I want it re-moved. MOT isn't a problem for me. It's just finding a place that'll remove it.

Even if T555VRS is not the registration number of your car I would be very careful about announcing on a public forum that you are able to bribe an MOT tester to pass an illegal car.  Could wind up with both of you getting screwed.

How do you remove posts on here?

Very good point btw !

You can't remove them. You could hide the entire thread. If you are a freedom member then you can edit posts whenever, otherwise there is a limit of about an hour after posting in which you can edit them.

You can request individual threads to be hidden. You'll see the option on your own posts, bottom right-hand corner.

And I would still follow the Shark route - it's well proven with many, many satisfied customers on here. It's also the only DPF-delete route I'd follow, if I was in your shoes.

Okay thank you very much ' Wardy '

Yes I spoke to Shark on Saturday and they are ringing me back tomorrow about how much a DPF delete pipe, Miltek turbo back and stage 1 remap will be. I'm hoping to have it booked it for this Saturday if there aren't to busy.

But this forum and the guys on here have been so helpful and really have pointed me in the right direction for everything so that i am truely grateful for.

No worries - that's what we're here for

Best of luck with it - you're in good hands with Shark.

I've spoke to shark.

Stage 1 remap + dpf delete.

Dpf gutted out and refitted and a cat back Miltek system.

£1,100aprx

Is this a fair price? I think it is, it just seems a lot of money for a a bit more power and an exhaust.

I'd forget the stainless exhaust and just remap/gut the dpf, you'll save £400-£500. What you hoping to achieve by installing the exhaust apart from a personal cosmetic improvement and small gains for big money.

The better flow of gasses through a gutted dpf should provide increased powergains over a non deleted dpf with a remap.

Fit an upgraded air panel filter (K&N -£36 eBay) before the ecu and dpf remap and the car will be even better.

The main reason for a exhaust system is for a bit more noise, especially on acceleration.

I agree with what you say. I was going to go for a open cone air filter for a touch of induction roar but I'll just be sucking warm air in. However yes a panel filter would give me performance just not any noise or very little.

Why not go for a stainless middle and rear section from the dpf back, surely that would be louder when resonated and still 'look like' ur keeping within the rules???

Yeah that's what I've asked for ' the Miltek cat back ' obv the dpf will be gutted out so I'll basically have a turbo back system ( or dpf back )

Just need to justify the cost with the mrs -_-

Oh sorry I missed that bit. Still £1100 seems quite a lot as a package when a cat back is £400-500 ish and the dpf delete and remap £500 ish. I would have expected a better deal, £800-900 max.

Yeah but add 20% VAT on £900 = £180VAT

Stupid Government...but that's a whole different thread all together :P haha!

Sorry, what's the breakdown for this?

Milltek is overpriced for what it is, IMO. I looked at one before I went with a Pipewerx custom system. That was 2011, but they'd not even tested their Octy2 system with a TDI at that time.

PipeWerx was around half the price, and the quality of the system and welds is better than Milltek, having compared both.

  • 5 months later...

Corten Miller don't offer revo software on pre 2008 octavias apparently
