Tardis - advise

Featured Replies

Evening all,

I've bought some Autosmart Tardis to get rid of the black tar marks on the VRS.

I was just wondering how and when to use it?

Is it best sprayed on, or it says it can be applied using a rag?

Should it be done before or after washing/shampooing?

Cheers fellas.

Tardis? According to the manual you can use it any time but it needs a Doctor.

i was expecting a reply along these lines from someone!

Make sure you assign a microfibre to use with it and don't use with anything else! Its very strong stuff.

I put it in a trigger spray. But you'll need a proper car cleaning/detailing one as Tardis will eat away at the seals and trigger on a standard one!

For tar marks, spray on and leave to work for a minute. Then work off with the microfibre. Clean and dry the car first, then use it. Then rinse afterwards.

As above you need a bottle with a chemical resistant spray head. To answer whether you use it before or after, the answer is both. Wash the car, rinse off, spray the Tardis on (don't allow to dry) and gently wipe off after allowing some time to work then thoroughly rinse off and rewash to make sure its all clean again, rinse and then dry.

Depends on which bit off the car your using it on.

Be VERY careful with it around smart repairs.

You can just dab it onto a make up pad, apply pad to tar spot (depending on size of tar) and let it sit for a minute or two to soften it.

PW off.

Or, spray on, leave it to work, PW off, you might, depending on tar deposit, need to help it along with a cheap MF.

And I prefer a gel type tar remover over Tardis, less waste and can be bought in smaller amounts.

Always helps to rinse the trigger out with water straight after use; that way you don't get the tar remover sitting inside eating away the internals! I've been using the same trigger for about 2 years now.

WD40 will also remove tar spots

as will petrol and even white spirit.

It is better than all of those though... in my experience.

Oh I agree, I use Tardis myself  Steve, was just saying in a pinch you could use any of them too.

Most people have one or the other lying around the house, it's only car cleaning saddos like

us that have to have the 'proper stuff' :):D Talking of which I just gave one of those clay mitts

a tryout today on my car pretty happy with the results, After a good cleanse, tardis and snowfoam

I set about using the mitt with a bucket of very slippery highly dosed  gold class solution and got

to work. It flattened the finish and smoothed really a lot better than I thought it was going to.

Certainly easier than proper claying and quicker too.

A couple of runs with that, hand wash, jet rinse and hand dry . I got a coat

of black hole on there, my tyres dressed and then the heavens opened up. To be continued  :wall:

Spray on. Leave 2 mins. Wash off. Repeat. Easy. Fine to apply to wet paint too. For spots it's fine to apply to a cloth directly to the affected area.

Mate Alan swears by GT-86

He says its better than WD-40

Yep, I agree with Alan.

For general household use though, I don't use either on car bodywork :)

Neither do I but I guess its no worse than using Tar Remover on it

True enough. Like has been said, if it's just a quick job it saves buying a separate product.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Hopefully give it a go next weekend if the weather and swmbo allow!

The general consensus is that this stuff shouldn't be used on things that have been freshly painted. Out of interest what would you use to remove tar spots on something that hadn't long come back from the bodyshop?

The same Alex

Just leave on for a little less time?

Maybe a daft question but will tardis strip off any sealant on the car?

yes

Thought so. Cheers Chris.

NEVER use tardis on fresh paint unless you are sure its been properly baked! Dont use any solvents on fresh paint.

Leave it longer to fully harden.

Better safe than sorry.

If you really need to remove tar from fresh paint, clay, carefully.
